How much TV do you allow your children to watch?

My daughter is 3 and she gets to watch from 8am-9am then again from 4pm-5pm. Do you think this is too much? Any thoughts would be helpful.

Hello Charlene, my son is 3, he gets to watch TV about as much as you allow, I think that´s quite good. My son would like to watch all the time if we let him...

Some days we go without even turning on the TV, other days, like rainy days, we watch some cartoons....usually Caillou (or whatever his name is) or Word World....we have basic cable so we don't get a lot of the nonsense. When she's laying down for bed, we watch a movie together then it's lights out. I just let her guide me as to how much TV is too much. She gets bored with too much and just leaves the room anyway, then I get to clean. :)

I don't think that 2 hrs is too much. I have a 3 & 2 yr. old. They get 1 episode when they wake up in the morning, 1 before nap, and 1 before bed. The shows she watches are about 20-30 minutes so they get about 1-1/2 hours each day. I agree with you, I could never leave the tv on all day. I think that eventually they will start to watch it more and more and it is a bad habit to get into.

My kids (2 and 3) are not watching TV regularly. If they like to watch they are allowed no more than half an hour and usually they watch a dvd, either Wickie (a little viking boy) or The Little Red Tractor or part of a disney movie, for example Finding Nemo, Lion King...

My daughter could watch tv all day she loves it and she really watches it ! every time the show is over she says mommy its over lol Nuts but she only watches Noggin and some nick jr she still plays and learns at preschool so if she wants to use her extra time to learn some spanish with Dora or how to help with Oso I am ok with that. Give me some time to clean and cook dinner since her and her sister do not play well. Its not more than a couple hours since we have a tight strict schedule of bedtime and get up time and dinner at the table with no tv

I think whatever you are comfortable with is ok.....my son is 3y 4m and some days we never put the tv on but others it is one for background noise most of the day his new thing is playing computer games on the pbs kids and noggin websites!

I can't keep my TV on all day. It would just bother me and I'd be afraid that my daughter would sit in front of it the whole time. I guess 2hrs a day is fine for her.

I was just going to ask the same question how much tv is too much for 3 1/2 year boy? I mostly keep it on for back round most of the day too he also just plays when he loses interest. Noggin is wonderful too, sometimes I think its even better then Sprout

my daughter is 3 aswell and the the amount of tv varies from day to day depending on what time she gets up!she doesnt have a specific time for watching tv. some days its on for 3 or 4 hours and other days its not on at all. like this morning she was up at 6.45 so she's been watching tv since!

I don't think thats too much. My son watches an hour of television on the Noggin Channel after preschool. His father or I will play with him for awhile. After that we have dinner and then he gets a bath. I let him watch about 45 mins more of that channel. I read him a book for about 15 mins and he goes to bed.

No I can't imagine two hours of TV being too much??? My son (also 3), like Kim's daughter, has the TV on for background noise most, if not all day long. He occassionally will watch whats on, but generally plays on the computer, or w/toys, occassionally video games. Of course there are days we don't bother turning it on at all, like if he starts on the computer, I'll just leave it off until he asks to turn it on. He does like to go to bed watching cartoons or movies though.

Nope that is what my daughter watches and she is three. She would like more and sometimes asks for more. She watches from 8a-9a and then from 7p-8p. It is like a wake up and a wind down thing for us.

I think a lot of kids shows have come a long way since I was younger. They are a lot more educational and I love that my daughter actually learns things. I am fine with her watching TV for a few hours a day. It keeps her entertained but she has her own limit as well. After some time she become uninterested and moves on to playing on her own. Sometimes she just needs the TV on for background noise. Its on but she isn't really watching.

Charlene, my son is 3 as well and i think what you are allowing your daughter to watch is perfect. a little in teh morning and a little in the evening. my son does like TV and his disney movies and sometimes all he wants to do is watch them. but i need to make sure that is he watches a movie that all his TV time is done for the day. i think your judgement is fine
