Lips turning blue?

Hi there,

I have a question. I'm thinking about contacting my son's pediatrician, but I don't know if I'm just being a paranoid mom. My son is 3 and he's currently taking swimming lessons. His lessons are about 30 minutes, but he doesn't last that long in the pool. He shivers like mad and his lips turn a slight shade of blue. This has happened since he was a baby (started taking swimming lessons at 8 months). He was born 6 weeks premature with no health problems. Has this happened to anyone?

Thanks everyone for your responses. Yes my son is very skinny. As soon as he gets out of the pool I wrap him up and put on a tshirt right away. Usually by the time we get to the change room he stops shivering.

My son is 3 also and he goes the same within 20 mins of getting into the pool I take him to the side and wrap tthe towel round him and rub gently to get blood moving if he hasn't stopped shivering after a few mins we get out and his lips turn back very quickly. Try this with him if it doesn't work then visit ped for check up. hope this helps

Check with your doctor... at least a nurse and see if they want to see him about it. Maybe it isn't an issue with the water, but the chemicals used in it. Maybe he isn't getting enough oxygen and/or having some type of reaction to the chemicals. Just a thought. I am personally very sensitive to things like that and so are my two sons. But we have not been taking swimming lessons, so we have limited exposure to pools, etc.

Hope you figure it out.

ya the cold water will turn them blue it happenes to my daughter when she gets in the pool, it wouldnt hurt to ask the doctor just to be on the safe side, if it happens more than just in the pool i would definently ask, my daughter went through treatment for cancer for over 2 years and i learned alot of things about health and when the lips or under the nails turn blue that means low oxygen but if its just in the pool i think its just the cold water

My kids lips have gone blue and they have shivered but this stopped by about 18 months and didn't happen all the time. The swimming pools round here are cold, I get cold in them if I am not active. I think the older my kids got the more acrive they have become so the cold is not so much of an issue. Is he a skinny thing? Are they hanging around in the water alot? Can he wear one of those little tshirts you can get for the beach? They are made of a sort of swimsuit material and some have uv protection. This would help keep him warm.

At the end of the day if none of these apply it wouldn't hurt to speak to your pediatrition even if its just for reassurance.

Hope this helps :)
