Thank goodness my son is not the only one to pretend he's a dog! My older 2 never did anything like that. My son,Kaine will eat like a dog, crawl to walk like a dog, pant, bark and lick. Sometimes I love it, it shows what a great imagination he has. But other times I have to tell him to stop. One time I had the cable man her to fix our cable box, and my little boy was baking at him, and then licked him.

hi we've just got a puppy and this is a problem for me but i find that if i just push him away and ignore him like i do with the puppy he soon gets the message. but later when hes calmer i talk to him and tell him thats its not very nice.

I great to see your child is acting like she should at her age! Pretend play is so fun for kids at 4. My son who is 4 and nieces (one niece is 4 and the other is almost 2) play doggie all the time. They don't lick..but they bark and do tricks LOL. But if you don't like her licking you, I'd suggest telling her "I don't like sloppy doggy kisses, but I love rubbing nose to nose doggy kisses" then show her what you mean!

Well, on a funny note: Be glad he isn't acting like a dog and biting you? I know that it isn't a serious response...but you have to admit, that there are worse things he could be pretending to be. Try explaining to him that you don't want him to lick, becuase he could get sick, which is true...there are so many germs out and about, especially now. Maybe he will take that to heart, and stop. Good Luck!

For my 3yrs old son, he's born in the year of dog and he loves pretending. He simply kisses me from toe to head when i jus reached home opened the door. He's really sweet.

My son loves to pretend to be either a lion or monster! Thank God he hasnt licked me yet! LOL! I would just tell her "Mommy doesnt like that very much" and then redirect her to do something else right away.. like playing fetch! :)

my girls are soon to be 3 and pretend they are kitties and my 4 year old son pretends he is a dinosaur ... T Rex to be specific and he chases the "kitties" and scares them until they cry. he also will lick me and roar in my face which I ask him nicely once to stop and if he doesn't then he goes in timeout. I hope this helps.

my daughter does that too but she's pretending to be a kitty, and i don't like it either but instead of making her feel bad about playing with me in this way, i just distract her by drawing her attention to something else and it works, and now she barely does it.a

my three year old did the exact thing, licking me and his uncle doesn't help by telling him "come here puppy...thats a good doggy". when i would tell him to stop he would laugh and countine ..but when i would ignore him he stopped. it took sometime, ( 2-3 weeks) but he no longer does it.

i have 3 kids that play puppy and kitty. i play along and when they lick i get dramatic. "oh yuck, i dont like puppy/kitty germs" sometimes i play fetch w/them. i'll toss something towards another toy they might like. sometimes they see the other toy and get distracted. but she will grow out of it.

My son plays doggy too, and I have noticed that when I make a big deal out of being licked, he does it even more. Trying not to get upset is difficult, but it has helped us, now he only licks when the puppy is silly LOL

This is too funny, my 3 yr old just started doing this last week. She thinks it's HILARIOUS and I laughed and played along at first...but at one point it got a tad bit annoying. I just told her that we could still play "doggy's" but we needed to stop the licking for right now. She understood and we continued our pretend "doggy" play!

Hit him on the head with a news paper and tell him to STOP!!!!! Im just kidding, my 3 year old acts like a dog also, but he has never licked me, but with my lil one it doesnt help that his 23 and 21 year old sisters tell him "Come here puppy"

My daughter did the same thing. What I had to do was find a friend who had a dog that was great with kids. We then let the dog lick her face, and she didn't like it one bit. I explained to her that just like she doesn't like when the real dog licks her, I don't like when she licks me when she's a dog. She got the picture and hasn't done it since. Now, if she likes being licked by the dog... Then I don't know what to say... =) Good luck!

unfortunately i have tried all of that, pushing her away, telling her it's gross, the only thing she has learned is the word disgusting. I'm hoping it's just a phase!

thank you for the advice, i love when she pretends. she has a great imagination. the problem is when she knows i don't like something, she thinks it's funny and does it more! she gets a crazed little look in her eyes and licks my face!!!! it's the grossest feeling ever!!!! she does it in public too! when i am pushing the shopping cart ,she licks my arm.

I can understand why you don't like to be licked. However, it is really important to see how your child is growing! Pretending is a way for your child to make sense of the world. When my daughter went through this, I just told her that I didn't like it when doggies licked me. Then I played with her, petting her like a doggie when she remembered she wasn't supposed to lick. She was happy I was acknowledging her imagination, and she stopped trying to lick within the day. Hope this helps for you, too!
