I would like to know your opinions. My daughter will be 4 in July. I really like her being home with a private sitter and she gets along well with all the children that she meets. The babysitter is teaching her the basics, colors, numbers and shapes. She doesn't wipe herself yet. I'm just tornon what to do? Do I send her to a pre-k or leave her home with a sitter??? Any advice will be of much help. Thank You
Jamie

As a former teacher, I say let her stay home with the sitter. She is already learning the things that she needs to know, and if you will be putting her into public school when she goes into Kindergarten, she will be advanced anyway. I personally think that pre-school is a waste of time because of that. I taught in a private school, and I prefered to teach the kids that didn't go to pre-k over those that did. Remember that the kindergarten teacher has to teach on the level of the lowest educated child, so your child will be bored. I'm not saying that you shouldn't be teaching her stuff at home. I think that you need to teach your child as much as you can, but you do want your child to be challenged on her level, too.

Ariel will be 4 in May. She's going to go to an all day universal prekindergarten class, 5 days a week. I opted for an all day instead of the half day because she needs the stimulation. She's recognizing letters of her name and is trying to write it out.

Jamie my kiddo has been away from me all day since he was 3 months old. he started out at an in home daycare until he turned 2. At that point we moved him to nursery school and he just moved up to pre-school. At the in home daycare she was working with him on colors, shapes, etc but at school he is learning different languages, how to play well with others, sharing and waiting his turn etc. If you can maybe you could do a combo of both but if you need to go one way or the other, I would have to say that school would be the best bet.

BTW, my son will be 4 in July also. he can't wipe either or spell his name but he knows more Spanish than I...go figure LOL

My son turned 3 in September and started 3year old pre k in September also. He only goes 2 days a week but loves it and even though he has always been very independent he has learned how to grow socially. At his school which is private they will not take kids that cannot go to the bathroom totally by themselves.

I put my son in pre-school for 3 days a week last summer, he just turned 4 a week ago and he loves going. I have another child at home, she's only 2 and i just couldn't give him everything he needed anymore. He's learned so much since he started school. He learns to listen to his teachers, not being so whiny anymore when he doesn't get his way and much more.

So i think it was beneficial for my son. After this summer he will be going to pre-K for 5 days a week.

Oh, but i do teach him things at home that they don't teach in pre-school.
