How did you all teach your child the alphabet? My son knows half of it. Any suggestions for the other half? Thanks.

Have you seen the toy called Fridge Phonics? My son started playing with that thing from the time he was around 10 months old and he knew his upper and lower alphabet by sight before he turned 2. He has hyperlexia though, so I don't guarantee it was the game, but I don't think it would hurt to try. :)

My son has 2 differe alphabet puzzles. one is a long floor puzzle that makes an alphabet train and the other is a Melissa and Doug talking puzzle. My son loves puzzles so it was a great way for him to "accidently" learn while playing. The song is great, but seeing and touching the letters - making it tangible - made all the difference.

We sing it together all the time, and we bought my daughter abc flash cards and a toy that goes on the fridge with magnets that identify each letter and sings the whole alphabet...after pressing the button 100 times and listening to the alphabet she learned the whole thing. Repetition is key

Keep practicing- singing the song, pointing out letters on walks, drawing letters for him to identify- keep it fun. You'll be surprised. Almost overnight, he'll suddenly have the whole thing down.
My 3 1/2 yo dd had only bits and pieces for a long time- but now she's able to sing the whole thing and is able to identify some letters.
my 5 yo is in Spec ed. preschool right now and FINALLY got his entire alphabet down earlier this school year and is coming along in leaps and bounds with identification of his letters.

I taught both of them by singing it a lot to them. Then also while walking or driving I would tell them to find things with the letter a, b, c, d, e, f, g etc, etc. How I did that is I would say A is for acorn can you find and acorn, they have a little bucket and they collect things, we call it the alphabet walk. b is for ball (i would buy pkt with those tiny balls and put it on the ground while they were finding the acorn, c is for coin. It was an adventure for them. Sometime I will place things around the house and tell them we are going on an Alphabet Treasure hunt. Once they have collected everything then we sit down and make Alphabet cards. They colour cut and paste. We decorate a shoe box and call it the Alphabet Box.

Keep singing the song with him. he'll get it. as far as learning to identify letters, flash cards work really well.

My son learned his alphabet from those old wooden blocks that you build with. Then I bought letters from the store and put it up in his room.

It is not that important to know his alphabet it is more important to teach him the correct sounds each letter makes. Phonics and whole word language are the two components to teaching language to a child. Phonics are the sounds and whole word is knowing a what a word says byseeing it and not sounding it out. If you really want him to learn the alphabet.... Sing, make it fun, and play "I spy". They love all of it!!

In the past, my son doesn't want to sit down and learn the alphabet, but he knew the alphabet song and could point to some letters. When I discovered http://www.notimeforflashcards.com/ and did the alphabet crafts with him, it was an instant hit with my son. He remembered the letters easily and he was having fun at the same time. starfall.com also is a great site for alphabets and phonics.

My son could read by 4 but at 3 he knew most of his letters but could not sing the ABC's. My daughter says some of the ABC's but it is parts here and there. All I can say is repetition is the best way but the song is not needed to learn letters or to read.

My son learned this before age 2, we would sing it ALOT! He has toys that would sing it as well. We also have blocks that we would line up and repeat them. I would ask him what letters were all the time. To start with he knew his letters but just didn't have the song down. So I would just work with him and he'll get it! My son also plays on the computer a lot! He plays at sesameworkshop.com & pbskids.com
