SO my name is Lori and my 3 1/2 year old son has been showing delays for a coule of years. He is very smart and knows a lot of thing children his age don't. But with some things he seems to be on a 2 year level. I finally got someone to listen to me and not tell me I am a paranoid mom. But I don't know what tests to ask about and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

usually you can ask for an assessment through your school district he is old enough that if he is delayed they can start an IEP and provide special ed preschool

Hello. I know when my son is three he will be out of First Steps program and the school system will be evaluating him before he terms out. I guess you could ask his physician or call the school district where you live and ask if they could assess him. I hope this helps!! Take care!!!

My 31/2 year old son has speech delays and is being evaluated by our county for free tomorrow. They also are evaluating him for everything else to see if he has any other delays. He is very smart, can write his alphabet and numbers, draw faces, etc. His pediatrician has been diagnosing him with Developmental Persuasive Disorder since he was 18 months without my knowledge. I have been trying forever to get the Pediatrician to refer him for testing for his speech delays and he keep telling me to wait. I was quite shocked to see his medical records at the IEP meeting....he wrote a bunch of stuff that was not true about my son. I don't know if he did that to get him evaluated or not, but I will be switching Pediatricians because of it.

We have just begun the process (finally) and hopefully he will get the speech therapy he so desperately needs.

Check with your county and see what programs they have...they are free! They will go to your child's daycare to evaluate him or to your home. Usually the therapy sessions are held at the nearest elementary school. Good luck!

My son is 10 years old is considered a slow learner according the the school systems. he has fail the 1st and is back in the 3rd grade this year. My mother in law has told me that the school system is supposed to give him more extensive testing and have in place in some kind of special ed class. We have done the svlvan learning center thing that cost us the price of a new kitchen with no real results his father is a teacher and I feel like a failure as a parent. I feel like I should have tested him earlier because I notice since he was a baby he was not developing at a "normal" rate is it took him longer to sit up and to walk he has been in speech class. He still does not talk as well as a 10 year old should. Homework takes forever and I do get frustrated HELP!!!!!

I was lucky, my doctor brought it to my attention. He then recommended that we see a neurologist and gave us a few different names. We found out that he was diagnosed with low muscle tone and that he would be behind in a lot of areas. We immediately enrolled him in a birth to three program and he moved up to the Intermediate Unit. He is now 5 and ready for kindergarten. I would tell you to take him to another doctor for another opinion. Or tell your doctor that you want him tested for autism or low muscle tone...not all procedures are invasive. What level is his speech at? Did he walk later? Was he attempting to crawl? If you have any questions for me or want to talk, just let me know. Hope you get an answer soon! Good luck!

Hey! I just found out yesterday (from a doctor) that my son is showing signs of speech delay and some developmental delays. Funny thing...I just switch his doctor. His first peds doc swore up and down everything I was paranoid about was totally normal. Well now, my son will be 3 next week and is going to see a speech therapist and a developmental therapist for an evaluation. My son is very similar to yours. My son is very smart, he just doesnt talk up to the level he should, and the doctor is concerned. Im all for anything to make my son better, but I think it hit me like a brick wall yesterday.

What have you tried? Did you ask your Pediatrician to refer you to someone ? My son who is now 8yrs was tested at 4yrs. We had him tested many a time before getting a diagnosis. He was first tested by the Intermediate unit of early childhood development. We also went to Children's hospital and then to The Watson Institute in Sewickley Pa.We live not far from there. My son seemed so smart but he had a hard time with fine motor skills and would get frustrated when trying to ask us something or express what he needed. I use to say it was like something got lost in his head. He knew what he wanted to say but couldn't seem to get the thought out. He would sometimes look at you as if you were speaking a different language. He is doing well but will always have to work hard. I hope you find the right place for your son. Don't give up it might take a few different places and testings to get to the truth. Hang in there!
