Hi, my name is Niki and I have a son who will turn 6 this month. We were concerned very early that something, however, minor, just shouldn't be.....Will was very anxious and hard to please even as an infant. He had colic for 6 months. Then followed pretty severe detachment syndrome and also some noticable anxiety. A toddler/preschooler with anxiety...??? Eventhough my husband and I are far from perfect, I would say we have as healhy of a home life as anyone else. Also, grandparents noticed that it was harder to soothe Will during infancy, toddlerhood, and preschool yrs. When Will was 3 I took him to our pediatrician who agreed that Will's symptoms did appear to be EARLY ADHD. He referred me to a child psychologist/psychiatrist.....THAT WAS A NIGHTMARE !!! She pretty much wanted me to throw everything out the window that worked...a little. After leaving there for a few visits that my mother even went with us too, I decided not to go back. Only then did my mom tell me she thought that lady was a "NUT"..lol. . ...So, a few months of total confusion on my part. Then, finally at age 4.5 I took Will to a pediatrician locally that would treat ADHD. He agreed that Will did have ADHD and agreed to treat him. He has been on Ritalin for nearly 1.5 years. Not constantly since I am a stay at home mom and homeschooling. I try to limit the meds. However, it seems I am doing him and myself a disservice by doing that. We have recently started Intuniv. Will has been on it 1.5 weeks. He seems aggravated more and will cry with his feelings hurt more. Does anyone know about this and whether those symptoms will go away with a few more weeks of using Intuniv ??????

I have a son 10 who was diagnosed with ADHD in first grade. We have found a connection for his hyperactivity and red food dye. Since then he has been rediagnosed with ADD. We have been up and down with him over the years, but have gotten ourselves to a good place. He is taking Ritilan LA only for school, it seems to be helping with his attention.

Hi everyone, my name is Jenn, and my son was diagnosed at the age of 5 yrs with ADHD, he is now almost 8. We tried a couple of different medications, but we now have him on Concerta. However, with his inability to fall asleep, we are now giving him melatonin at the doctors suggestion, which helps him relax and slow down. He is now finally gaining weight, and we were all very excited when he hit the 50lbs mark!!! We live in Alberta, Canada, and I find that there are still a lot of people that look down on you when they find out about the diagnosis. I truly believe that this is absolutely ridiculous! People need to realize that not everyone is perfect, and everyone has their own little qwerks! Our son is doing very well in school, and at home. He is flying through the second grade, and really looking forward to third grade!

My name is Ashley and I have a 6 (almost) 7 and will be moving into the 2nd grade next school year, and suffers from ADHD and ODD an severe rage issues. We have tried him many different medications and treatments that have been unsuccessful, but I have read some of the other posts and I now have some new questions for his doctor. He was diagnosed and medication started right before he turned 4 years old. He has good days and bad days and we are just trying to find the right treatment for him. His school works so wonderfully with him and we are truly grateful for that. He is very intelligent and is excelling at school so we don't know what triggers the outbursts. Our problem right now is that he becomes very defiant and aggressive and can go from being a happy go lucky boy to mean and angry at the world boy. It is difficult some days, but i thank God every day for giving me my little boy and I just hope that we can find a way for him to live as normal life as possible, even if it is with medication. Good luck to you, and if you ever want to chat I'm always here and could use someone to talk to that understands what I am going through.

Hello! It's nice to know there are other om's out there that can relate to how you feel! I have an 8 yr old son who was diagnosed w/ severe ADHD at 4 years old. He was so out of control we had to put him on meds before he started school. He was on ritalin twice a day and it kept having to be raised so we changed him to addreall xr, which affected his asthma, so we are now using concerta (for about 2 2 1/2 yrs now) and it seems to be worknig well. we had to up his dose to 36 mg, and he's not gaining weight well, but he's ok weight and an honor student in school. he has had a few days where his script ran out and he went to school with out it and there was a severely noticable change! I get calls from his teacher asking what happened! Mornings and bed time are a night mare!!!! He wakes up and doesnt get anyone else up, he just steals candy and snacks and anything else he can find! he draws on walls and does EVERYTHING he can think of to get into trouble! He has insomnia from the meds so bedtime is harsh. he refuses to fall asleep til around 1 am! he lays in his bed, plays, yells.... ugh its horrible!!!
HI , A meatonin tablet at night may help your son sleep. My son is 16 and is on Cocerta 12hour tablet and he has trouble going to sleep also. Melatoin is from the health store. Also with ADHD children they need to stay away from processed foods high in sugar. Victoria. Sorry [ MELATONIN ]

My son was diagnosed in 1st grade and he is currently not on a stimulant. He was first giving Adderall, but I did not like all the negative side effects. He is now on Strattera. I understand all the frustrations the come along with being a mom of an ADHD child and often joked about starting a support group for mom's in my area. Honestly I am only half joking, because it can become very frustrating at times and I just need to vent to people who understnad.

Hi, this my first time talking in circle of mums and daughter has ADHD, she been on quite a few different types of meds. Unfortunately there is no cure as she still can drive us crazy even on them sometimes and going to beds is always a nightmare. She has been on Ritalin since the end of 1st grade, now she is in 3rd grade. The medication helped her at school but by the end of the day it has all worn off and the vicious cycle begins.....
Kim, We recently took my son off his meds because he was a crazy mess when they wore off first though i started testing it by taking him off for a few days at least 5-7 then putting himm back on for another few 3-5 I noticed he became way less irritable off the meds but got crazy all over again on them we tried five different meds I did the same thing with all when I noticed him getting all irritable and now off the meds he is fine tottally hyper and in trouble at school but not crazy and im working with the school seperatly because they cant tell me i have to medicate my son. anyways thats just me one thing i can tell you is get Melatonin it is a comepletely natural supplement tottally safe for your daughter ask the pharmasist what dose you can get this over the counter at walmart anywhere its just a vitamin supplement that will really help her sleep another mom with a son with ADHD recommended it to me and it has saved our nights I even take it sometimes when I need a good nights rest it is awesome and SAFE. My son is seven and really small he takes a three mg tablet but at some health food stores you can get dissolvable tablets in one or three and you can get 5 mg pills to. I cant believe how much better he sleeps for us. just 30 min before bed and hes out like a light!
