New to this site - My 7 yr old DD was prescribed this med (Vyvanse) for ADHD and would like to know if any other moms children are taking it and how the results have been. I do realize that all children may have different a different reaction. Thanks for any information in advance.

My dd was put on VyVanse at 9 yrs old she has jumped reading levels from 3rd grade she was at a 2nd grade level in just 2 years she has jumped 3 grade levels , her math grades are awessome. it is the best thing I have done for her... now she feels like school isn't a waste of time. that makes me happy , it has also helped her be more aware of her surroundings. I wish i had done something sooner.

...just pour the powder into the beverage. You don't need the capsule itself, just the contents.

If your child has a difficult time swallowing pills, you can open the capsule and put it in some juice or another beverage (or yogurt). Just make sure it is mixed well and that they consume all of it. It will work the same. Hope that helps!

I am on this site looking for the same answer as you. I give my 9 year old daughter Vyvanse only on school days. I believe the problem lies in our school curriculum. there is no repetition when teaching and teachers are pushed to get some many different things in 9 months time. If we slowed down a little and taught repetitively most children would not require these highly addictive medications to focus to the level our government and school board is pushing for.....just saying....\Best wishes to all and their children I only hope we are making the right decision when giving this to our children.

My son was just diagnosed with ADHD - primarily inattentive. We've known he was primarily inattentive since 1st grade, but chose not to medicate. He is in 3rd grade now, and he was really struggling. The pediatric psychiatrist prescribed Vyvanse 20 mg daily. He is sleeping better at night. The first couple of days he had some stomach pain, and mentioned he felt full, but we told him the importance of eating. Now he eats more than before he was taking Vyvanse.

We can tell it has made a positive difference at home, but still waiting to see if it improves his grades. The teacher said he is paying attention much better, however, his test grades this week were the same if not worse. I was just wondering if it takes a few weeks to notice academic improvement.

My son who is 13 now. started Vyvanse in 2cd grade. Before this he was on adderal and tried stratera. Vyvanse is awesome for adhd. his personality comes thru and u can adjust the strength in the summer to be smaller since there is no school. He does so much better at homework but as you know adhd is a work in progress. most kids are 1 year behind their peers emotionally and maturing. My son is shorter then some kids in his grade now but that doesnt mean he will stay that way. Trust me he grows just at a slower rate. Being organized and setting up a timeframe now for homework will help when your child gets older, If you dont have one already make sure your child has an IEP( individualized education program) for their needs. With this they receive school needs such as speech, mentoring, and extra time on tests and homework. Trust me u need this talk to your school office for info. Hope this helps....

My 13 yr old twins take 70 mg and it works very well for them and helps them focus. They do very well in school and have no more impulsove behavior. My 6 yr old takes 60 mg and it does help but I notice a difference in his eating habits. He hasn't been gaining weight as steadily as he used to before the medicine. That is all I have noticed with 3 of my boys who take it.

Oh how wonderful it has been for my child. We went through a lot of medicines before a new doctor took one look at my 10 year old and said I have the perfect medicine for him. Vyvanse is doing its job for my child. I have two sons on it and they are perfect children. There are no side effects to this medicine. In fact one you take it in the morning its out your system by the evening.

They put my son who is 6 on Vyvanse. I thought it was great until the moods started to changing very badly. My son was feeling worthless, no motivation to do anything, saying he didnt have a family, hated everthing and everyone( thats pretty strong word for a 6 year old to use). He started physically abusing him self if things did not go his way and on top of that he wasnt sleeping at all. I called my pediatrician and he told me take him of Vyvanse right away!! We havent been on it since. Hes alot better now and wanting to do things that he enjoyed and I feel like I have my son back. But it might work differently for your daughter.

I had my now 1o yr old on Vyvanse for almost a year..His thyroid became dangerously high!!!!!! After years of conventional doctors and believe me been to them all. Yrs of theraphy, meds etc...I took my son to a biomedical doctor. What a blessing, everything I found out was amazing. My son's doctor did blood work on food allergies, vaccine levels and so much more I was astonished that I was drugging my baby with stuff that was so bad for his health...Found out he had 13 food intolarences and one of his vaccines was over the limit on how much he should have in his body..Took him off the medicine, changed his food diet and started him on probobiotics and many other supplements. He struggled at first but now is doing well :) its still a work in progress but we are both happy that he is not on the drugs that use to make him zone off into space and kill him with stomach pain and dizziness. I went to school to see my kids at lunch time one day he never touched his lunch and was so spaced out it made me cry...I decided to keep searching for a answer. My son has ADHD/ODD and Sensory tackitile disorder...

Please( if you would like to) read these books they will help you shed some light that its not a mental but physical problem that causes mental problems.

"Children with starving brains" by Jaquelyn McCandless

MD

"changing the course of autism"...by Bryan Jepsen MD

"Autism:Effective biomedical treatments" by jon pangborn, PHD and sidney Macdonald Baker MD

these books were so helpful for me. I thought I would share my story(probably many will not like it) maybe it might help at least 1 person if not many...I wish you the best ! .

My son had a hard time swallowing pills too. I would put it in applesauce or yogurt and since you don't have to chew the applesauce or yogurt, he just swallowed the pill along with it.

I need some help ... I am having a difficult time getting my 6 year old daughter to take her Vyvanse. I have been mixing it with juice and/or YooHoo; she can't swallow the pill. What have you tried that has worked? We seem to have battles to get her to take it. She says it makes her feel like she needs to throw up. I think it is that the med does not taste good and she gets herself worked up about it. Please if anyone can give me any ideas it would be appreciated.

My daughter was taking Vyvanse and for her it was the best medication she haas taken so far! She maintained her appetite, slept fairly well, and was alert the whole time during her everyday functions! Unfortunately could not afford anymore and had to change to Focalin XR, let's see how this one works! Hope this helped!

my son has been on this med for a year (minus summer time) and he does great on it. we were trying to do the "weekend break" thing but it made him feel worse and his moods were terrible, so i give it to him everyday now. I dont let him take it when we have a longer break than 2 days though, that way he can eat better but has time for his body to adjust. the two days just wasnt enough time for him to get it out of his system and feel good then try to get it back in his system on monday, made him very down on mondays and i couldnt stand the thought of him feeling crappy at school, mondays are bad enough! he hasnt gained any weight, (hes 5'1 87 lbs) but hasnt lost any either. All in all, the meds do help him in school and seems the pros definatly outweigh the cons. Good luck!

My son is experiencing the same side effects as you describe. Unfortunately, these side effect are quite common. I know how you feel--my son is like Daffy Duck
on speed! My son's psychiatrist recently prescribed an anti-convulsive to help with his moods and emotions. Before starting Vyvanse, my son would go through cycling mood swings. He would get angry and aggressive for no apparent reason--something would just set him off. Both Bipolar and ADHD run in the family so, there is a likelyhood that my son may have both!! Since starting the mood stablizer, there are no late afternoon crashes! A side effect from the stablizer is that it makes you want to eat and it also makes you drowzy--He now eats all of his dinner and has a good nights rest. He has been a real joy!

My daughter is on Vyvanse and it has worked well for her inattention. I have noticed that she has no self control when the meds wear off though. It's almost unbearable. She has also lost a great amount of weight and is not growing.

I have been taking Vyvanse for about 6 months for ADHD. It has changed my life! I recently started my 5 year old son on it too! He is doing amazing!!! I didn't tell anyone that my son was taking the meds--except my husband and his teacher. I wanted to see what people had to say about his behavior. They couldn't believe the transformation!!

My daughter has been taking Vyvanse everyday before school and on the weekends. We are still trying to find the right dosage. They seem to work for the first couple of weeks and then we are back to where we started. Yesterday was the first day she did not take it and we saw a big difference. She seems to be doing MUCH better in school with it. When does your child take it?

Thanks for all your comments. We have been on Vyvanse now for six weeks and one dose change. We have seen a huge change in school, she has raised her grades to 90% and above. We are still playing with the dosage, the nights are sometimes very difficult. We have another week before we see the doc again. We will go from there. Thanks again and looking forward to possible hear from you again.

Yeah I agree. My boys are perfect when on Vyvanse but when off OMG! I have told the doctor that I was concern with that and she said it was just them not the meds...I disagree to that. I make my children eat even if that dont want to and the school makes sure they eat also. I love Vyvanse for helping my children with their problems. The only thing that concerns me is when the meds wear off they are totally out of control. My youngest son went from having F's to A's. He is still behind but quickly catching up. I hear that moms have tried their childrens meds and I have thought of that but Am to scare of what I will find out. I wish they would help our nations children in this matter. Find the right combo of meds to put our children on... God bless every parent that has to go through ADHD children.

My 6 year old son just stopped vyvanse last week. We were on it for almost four months. He focus did get better at school but his agressive behavior got worse when the drug wore off in the evening. He also had nop appetite whatsoever and lost 10 pounds. Vyvanse was our third stimulant since August 2010 since he was diagnosed with ADHD. Last month MD started intuniv to help with the mood swings and agressive behavior but it made it worse. Stopped the intuniv and tried vyvanse and wellbutrin. After two days on that combo he starting hallucinating that he was seeing spiders crawling all over the walls and on him. It was so scary that I thought I was going to have to bring him to the ER. It took him a hour to calm down and MD had us stop both meds. Now he is taking a slow release form of clondine for the next six weeks instead of a stimulant. I feels so bad that we haven't found a medication that works without all the side effects of mood swings and loss of appetite. I am praying that we find something soon because I feel so bad that is having to try all these meds. Also starting behavioral therapy next month. I wish you luck with vynase. Our MD said it would take a while to find the right medication. Have patience and just watch for the side effects.

I love Vyvanse! Great meds! It took doctor to finially get it right after after 6 years. My sons have ADHD and have been on it for three months. No problems at school or at home. My younger son is in the third grade. He went from 40's to A's and B's. It calms them down and lets them pay attention more. Love it...

Vyvanse worked great for my sons behavior, you could notice a different quick! BUT....... as he continued taking it... headaches, really irritable (not normal for a 6 yr old child) weight loss. Vyvanse is a stimulant drug & a very strong one. honestly if you ever took one of your childs pills you would be SHOCKED ON HOW IT MAKES YOU FEEL!!! speed, crack, cocaine you name it ... similar side effects that is super scary to know and think your child is taking this. My biggest regret is not doing my research first. I also regret not trying a NON stimulant med. first!

I'm actually a 14 yr old boy On vyvanse my parents say I'm behaving slot better an I can also focus better in school and some of the side effects I get are upset stomach, dizzy, loss of appetite ( although I ate small portions throughout the day) , bad taste in mouth, have difficulty sleeping, I talk alot, jitters, the loss of appetite I had went away after about a month of taking it. Also I read that it can stunt growth so you should get growth Checks by your doctor. And I take mine once a day when I get up for school around 7 am hope I helped

I have two boys on Vyvanse. My 10 yo has noticed the side effects when not taking it regularly (fatigue and nausea). My 8 yo SS doesn't complain about it really, regular admin or not. The major thing for both of them is that it does suppress appetite. But, as long as you feed her smaller portions of healthy foods, she will get all of her nutrition! You may want to add in an extra snack if she doesn't eat well at one meal. By dinner tho' they are "starving" most nights! :)
