I know there are a lot of yogurt products on the market that contain probiotic, but are they any foods that your kids really love? I already feed them supplements, but I'd love to find some tasty foods that contain probiotic as well. Any suggestions?

Tammy asked about the difference between prebiotics and probiotics. Prebiotics are nutrients which selectively feed the friendly bacteria. Probiotics are supplemental populations of the "friendly bacteria" residing in the colon which help to maintain healthy intestinal microbial balance. If you would like more information on prebiotics and probiotics, I can send you a .pdf file which explains it. Just email me at diana@healthkat.com.

I am not aware of any off hand. I think that most good probiotics need to be refrigerated.

I am really curious. My son (6) has problems with going poop. It started in the past 1 1/2 yrs. He potty trained at 3 and never had any problem until recently. It is such large quantity, sometimes soft, sometimes hard, painful, and he sits on the toilet trying to poop for usually 1 - 3 hrs. The dr. told me to give him laxative everyday, but I can't see that being very healthy. I've been having him eat activia yogurt everyday and it seems to be helping a little bit; just not even close to enogh. My mom just mentioned probiotics to me this morning. She said what she had found so far was very expensive. From the arcticle that she read, it sounded like it might be helpful for my son. Any thoughts?

Diana, you have the unbiased sincerity of a marketing brochure. Please push your wares elsewhere... we're looking for honest and helpful advice, not a sales pitch.

My kids take Mit-a-Mins Probiotic and Children's Regular Mit-a-Mins. They are isotonic and taste like juice. Because they are immediately absorbed (without having to be broken down by the stomach) they get a high concentration of probiotics, vitamins and phytonutrients. These are incredible supplements and taste great.

If your child is sick and needs the probiotics then you should take the pill my child had a heart transplant at 5 years old and is now 7 and her stomach doctor said you would have to eat a cup of yogurt 3 times aday everyday to match the one pill my child just takes pills good but that is good for us she takes 14 different pills some 4 times aday.

What about giving a 7 month old yogurt? I also sometimes give her smoothies but with just fruit and little bit of juice, mainly apple. It seems to help with fussiness and gas and she loves it, she drinks a cup in one sitting a day.

The bacterial culture in Danactive is the same strain as that in Culturelle. The trademark name is different. No need to torture your kids with supplements, just let them drink a Danactive smoothie. My 2.5 yr old drinks one everyday. He did not have one fever all winter and I didn't miss a single day of work.

How old are your kids? I'm wondering if they might like kombucha tea. It comes in a lot of different flavors, many of them sweet, but it also has a strong vinegar taste which is not to every kid's liking. My daughter loves it, but she also really likes anything sour -- lemons, capers, and vinegar chips.
