How to find a Homeschooling group in the Oakville, ON area?

Be patient with moms and grandparents. They often come around when they realize you're not screwing up your kids. My mother-in-law never said anything negative (she never interfered in anything), but I could tell she wasn't so sure about the idea at first. However, after about 10 years, she was just glad the kids weren't in public school!

My mom was a teacher too, but so am I and my husband. She probably knows we are considering homeschooling, but she will worry for all of us. She may be supportive, but she may just flip out. I don't want to stress her -- I love her dearly. I think there will need to be more prayers around here!

Start a group of your own. That is what I did here in Louisa, Ky. It can be as much or as little as you want. Hang fliers and ask if anyone homeschooling would like to plan play dates...to contact you. I started out small, but I ended up being more than I dreamed and I love it. Thanks for your ideas and the advice, ladies. I guess I just needed to be a bit more patient as Cheryl said, as I just got an email about a group that meets quite close to my house.
I am starting get really excited about home schooling my kids... now I just have to figure out a way to tell the grandparents:)

Do you have a church? A lot of the moms at my church homeschool, you would never know from looking at their families. You may want to ask your pastor. I just found out that some of my neighbors homeschool boys that are the same age as mine!

Sometimes it takes awhile to get responses, many homeschoolers are busy trying to finish things up, getting gardens and farms ready, etc. And some just don't have home internet access- they goto the library.

Do you know anyone else who homeschools in your town? Are there any yahoo groups for your area that you can join? We are in the thumb of Michigan and there are like five yahoo groups :-) so when I hear of a field trip, I just need to evaluate if I want to drive that distance (which really anything in the thumb is about a hour away ;-)

I wouldn't worry so much about making sure you have a group of peers- just find a few boys he enjoys being with. That's one of the benefits of homeschooling to prepare for real life- your child learns to relate and function with all ages. Where else in life are you in a room with 20 others that are your same age?!?! None of my work experiences had that!! While my daughter has a few friends her age, my son has a wide variety of ages
