I need advice from Ontario homeschoolers

Thanks alot Jennifer I will be checking out that website. I somehow have to get my husband onboard a little more. He is...being very passive towards the idea, saying that I will be the one doing it so whatever I thnk i can handle. He is going to be gone alot  being in the military but I still need him to be openly in favor of it. I guess I have 5 years to do that.

Have you checked out OCHEC, the Ontario Christian Home Educators Connection? They would be able to direct you to a local chapter and give you a contact name of someone in your area. They are www.ochec.org/ They have an area that includes Ottawa-Carleton and if you click on "contact us" on their home page, you'll get a list of their area reps along with an email link to the rep.



I hope that helps a bit.



Are you enjoying Ottawa? I lived there while in High School and really enjoyed the springtime there. It's a beautiful city!

I homeschool my son through Canadian Christian Academy. They are recognized as a private school. They use the Accelerated Christian Education format as well as many others. I was raised in a Baptist Church and attended a Christian school there. This is the same cirriculum I was raised on. I like to use them because they are recognized by the Colleges and Universities. They send me the work and I send them back the finished tests. They keep a file on my son and report to the government. I live in Windsor, ON. Where are you located?

I'm not sure where you are in Ontario, but in SouthWestern Ontario there are lots of small (and some not-so-small) local chapters of home school groups. If you're looking for basic information about legalities etc., you can check out OCHEC, or HSLDA Canada has information about each of the provinces.



Homeschooling in Ontario is quite open. You don't have to associate with a school or board, there is no requirement for reporting to the Ministry of Ed., etc. And there are LOTS of homeschoolers around, so there is likely someone in your area to connect with. (Our little city of 30,000 has a Christian Home School group with over 40 families.)



As for conventions, there are two main ones in my area (I'm in Stratford) - one is the OCHEC convention that is held in Hamilton. It has plenary sessions, lots of workshops, vendors hall, etc. The other is the Kitchener - Waterloo convention. It is smaller in some ways (eg. no plenary sessions) but has a great vendors hall and lots of workshops, too.
