Everytime that I've mentioned that my husband and I have decided to homeschool my middle school boys people come out with the worst horror stories ie; they came back to public school and got held back, they weren't accepted into college, they failed all their "standards" testings, etc. Has anyone had "bad" experiences or is it up to the parents to hold to the curric?

Never had a problem, not even as a new homeschooler. Sounds to me like the parents dropped the ball or didn't want to do the work. I would never make the decision to send them back to public school. You have to be creative and consistent.

The only way you could fail at homeschooling is if you ignored your children all day and let them play video games, etc.

People naturally tell the failures because that is all they hear about!! (It's the same with pregnancy stories too...have you noticed?)

We homeschool and have 5 children. My oldest is 9th grade and my youngest is Kindergarten. There are so many good stories about homeschooled kids who excell when they get into the world. I know of a family that has 5 kids and her first 2 (twins) have graduated college for nursing and elem education!

Yes you need to actually teach the curric but you get to pick which one and not someone else! So don't listen to the nay-sayers! and unless asked...don't say you are homeschooling. It will be less people you have to deal with as far as opinions go.

There are a lot of horror stories regarding public schools too. Kids get held back, graduate by the skin of their teeth, still can't read at grade level, etc.

Relax!!

There has to be a reason your taking them out of the public school and deciding to home school so that has to be your main focus. Everybody and their grandmother has an opinion but only you know your children and what's best for them. I have 4 boys and my oldest is middle school age and we have decided to teach all of our kids through the middle school grades and then evaluate our decision about highschool later on. If anything, you and your husband's standards will be much higher than the public school and they will do just fine if not better. It's been proven over and over again. I remind my kids daily the discipline and work ethic they need in order to get their work done for the day and if they don't do what they're supposed to do there are consequences. That will help them in college far more than being spoon fed in the public schools. Plus there is no middle man to deal with so you're far more likely to figure out your child's weaknesses or problems right away. Rather than figuring it out too late. I hope you both hold to your gut feeling and ignore the "horror" stories. I've heard plenty of horror stories with kids in the public school system.

I know alot of parents that home school and their kids always were above par based on the public school system testing. I would love to home school my son, but my husband thinks it is an awful idea and has a million reasons I have responded to with facts. I have never heard a bad story....

None, never have actually met a bad homeschool family (in the sense that is didn't work and they stopped) Sure there are lots of stories, but none that I know of for sure!!

Now i will warn you that since they are already in public school, you will have a different experience than someone like me who started in preschool/K. They say to give your kids some downtime to decompress from public school. Use this time to talk about hwo they want to learn- do they like workbooks like at school or would they like to read more on their own or as a family? This will help guide you to make homeschool the best for your family...

God bless you on this transition!!
