We just returned from a vacation with connecting flights, so I'm adding this to my travel advice: pack a carryon with a spare outfit (clothes, underwear, pjs) and basic toiletries for everyone. Our luggage was lost going and returning. Thus was an annoyance at the end of the vacation, but an expensive and annoying errand at the beginning.

My favorite thing to pack for long car rides was pipe cleaners! They're cheap, don't take up much space, and the kids would play with them for hours. They could twist them into all sorts of different shapes, and they come in all kinds of colors.

Our daughters are now 24 and 28 so this happened Many Many Years ago.
I would keep several chunky board books, and other small toys. NON had pieces that could get lost. ALL were travel size. I would add to and take away as the girls grew or their likes changed. I did keep a few "Old Stand Buys" A couple of stuffed animals that they ONLY could Play with in the car or where ever we ended up for the night. Each girl was allowed to bring their favorite blanket and stuffed animals or dolls. We made it a game to decide "who" would be the doll or animal that get to go on the vacation. I also had a tupperware like box that would hold their crayons and paper and coloring books. All of this was kept in a back pack that again was only used on Vacation
When our daughters were home last summer they took a trip down memory lane when they
were looking through boxes from their childhood much younger.
