I want to start the habit of having devotions for my child. But he's still a baby right now. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to get this started and at what age? I know the Word does not return void, however - I want to engage my baby and make God an exciting part of our family.

Thank you!!

My husband and I prayed for our son before he was even born. We pray for his future wife even now. He is 10 months old. We just started to include holding hands during our dinner prayer yesterday. We always pray but now that we sit together and he eats finger foods it is a little bit easier. My parents always had a nightly routine of reading us Bible stories, praying with us (sincerely not by rote) and my mother always sang us hymns, worship songs and lullabies in her rocking chair. I want to carry on the traditions that my parents did for me not because they are traditions but because they gave me a real foundation in Christ. I hope that all of our children learn to love the Lord at an early age. Children develop the fastest before age 3. Our pastor, from Calvary Chapel, Chuck Smith used to say that his mom read to him straight from the King James Version even as a young person. I thought that that was cool. He is 80 plus years old now. He knows the Scriptures well ("teach it to your children, and your children's children) Deut. is a good place to find verses about this subject. God bless your family.

Definately- any Bible story books can be used for toddler devotions!! Also, I would not skip teaching verses to as young as 2 or 3!! They can learn it and not just the short version, it's amazing!! When I think of how much of my brain is clutterred with useless song lyrics and movie lines, if I had learned verses instead, how much better off would I have been when going through trials or tough times. We try to learn one a week- start with obiedence or kindness or family...

We have a daily praise time. We read a little from the Bible (usually Psalms because babies love the meter to these verses), than we sing 2 hymns and then pray. We also include him in our family prayer times. He (5 1/2 months old) and I also say little prayers together throughout the day.

We have been praying with our kids since they were born they all say prayers at meals and bed time. We have a book with devotions in it for children, it's called Blessings Every Day. We use it with all of our kids at the same time (the oldest is 7 and the youngest are 22 months) We have been using this book with them since my oldest turned one. The rest of them have all had it since birth. It is never too early to start. Reading the Bible to them is always good. We have a children's Bible that is a board book, so they can play with it and not rip the pages. And each of our boys have their own Bible. They can't read yet, but they love it when I read to them out of their Bible (Which is the same translation as mine, that way they say the same thing no matter which one I read out of). There are lots of wonderful CDs that have a combination of Bible stories and songs. I play that often, and also have the Bible for children in a CD set. It includes scripture and some songs. We also play Sunday school songs for them when they go to sleep every night.

My 20 month old loves watching VeggieTales and we pray at mealtime and bedtime. This has helped to introduce her to Jesus in a way she can understand!

They have the Baby Bible books for boys and girls, I would read the boys one to my son since he was born. By the time he turned 6 months old, he would turn the pages... now he brings the book to me to read to him. Sing child songs to your baby. Pray Scripture over your baby. Anything can be a "devotion". :)
