I'm looking for ways to help my 9 1/2 month old son use gentle touches with his 5 month old friend who I babysit and also with other friends, faces..etc. He loves to wack at stuff (he uses a wisk and wacks a little ball all over the house) any thoughts on how to help him learn how to be gentle would be great! He so interested in touching/feeling everything around him.

My son is now 14 months and really into faces and saying the parts best he can: eyes, nose while trying to gently poke at them-he's getting better. I have done the same thing with taking his hand and telling along with modeling how to be gentle and he's gotten it. He KNOWS now and will puposely pick up a toy and hold it over his friends head to see what I'll do.. So now we are in the testing stage. The toy is immedietly taken away and he can't have it unless he can use it correctly, push the car on the floor, read the book, etc. So he gets it and knows it know-he just wants to see if I'm going to follow through. Thanks for your replies.

I have a 2 year old and a 5 month old. When we first brought the baby home we had a time trying to teach our older son how to be gentle because he is a very active and physical boy, we would tell him to be "gentle" while we took his hand and rubbed the baby softly. Then of course we would praise him when he did it right. He seemed to learn quickly and does really great with the baby now. Hope this helps!

How do you usually discipline? I certainly don't suggest swatting his hand - mixed signals. Firm "no" followed by removal / redirect to more appropriate behvior would be my route. I would even tell him that he can only play with his friend when he's choosing to be nice to his friend.

My two yr old is like this, he is always hitting things or kicking things.  We tell him to be nice and show him like a petting sort of touch and he does really well with that.  He'll repeat "be nice" and do the petting.
