Hell? The devil?

I'm confused as to what to believe when it comes to hell and the devil. I was raised Roman Catholic and was taught the whole fire and brimstone, little evil man with horns and a pitchfork theology but, since I've left the RCC and started attending my hubbys church I've been really questioning it (in fact I don't really believe that at all). Our church teaches that Hell is right here on earth it is our adamic nature and the sin which surrounds us and that the devil (hebres word meaning: adversary) can be ourselves, our friends, our neighbours or anything which tempts us and not necessarily a physical being. Yet, the bible talks so much about the devil so it's hard not to believe in an actual scary little man who whispers bad thoughts into our ears. My question is what do you as moms and Christians believe? and why?

Also used to be very confused, but after reading information from the site spiritlessons.com, i now have a clear picture of the devil, heaven and hell. You could try to read it too.

Read the book 23 minutes in hell. You will see why hell is very real and it is not here on earth, it is in the center of the earth. A place I for sure do not want to end up. I hope you have Jesus in your heart and follow Him always.

I believe there is a devil. He was one of God's angel's that turned against him. I don't believe he's some guy with horns and a tale that we as humans have made up. But I do believe he's a person, that someday will be thrown in the lake of fire once and for all by Jesus Christ.

I generally caution against gotquestions.org, they are very opinionated and I can't say always biblical... just my personal opinion, but wanted to share. Please don't anyone take offense. I haven't asked them a ton of questions, but the ones that I did there were some major differences there... I think it is important to not just take what one person or site says as gold, but keep digging and make sure that what you find is really what the Bible says. It is easy to twist things giving one or two verses that support what you are saying, but you need to look at verses in context, and the Bible as a whole, not just a verse or two.

www.gotquestions.org

You can type a question or keyword(s) into Search ("satan", "hell" "devil") and any question you might have will pop up for you to choose from.

Remember, the smartest thing Satan ever did was to get the world to believe he doesn't exist.

i'm not sure what kind of church you go to ... however what I can suggest you to do is read Revelations book in the bible .... i believe wholeheartedly that Satan is the ruler of the world we live in and when Jesus Christ comes for His bride ( the body of Christ) he will crush the serpents head. It also says that Satan and all the "followers" or people who don't fully wholeheartedly live for Christ will be cast into a lake of fire to be punished forever .... read the book 23 minutes in Hell as well as Mary Baxter's book Devine Revelation of Hell. These two books were written years apart however a lot of their accounts on hell are undeniably the same.

Tammy is right about the T.V. Evangelists, but I would caution you, not all of their teachings are always correct either. I have a problem listening to people preaching things that they aren't living. I haven't listened to all of them personally, so I cannot and would not tell you what to watch or what not to, but please test their teachings against the Bible. I would recommend googling them before listening to them here are some site you may want to check out.

Marta the fact that you are asking these questions tells you that something isn't right. That's the Holy Spirit trying to guide you. These ladies are right read your Bible and ask the Holy Spirit to teach you and give you direction. But I would seriously think about finding a Bible based church. There are word shows on Tv that will give you much understanding Joyce Meyer, Kenneth Copeland, 700 Club, Bill Winston, Creflo Dollar these people deliver the whole word of God not a religion. If you and your husband are not saved this is a very simple process Romans 10:9, Romans 8:10 and Isaiah 43:11. Do this and believe and ask God to forgive your sins and He will. Love to you and your family, Tammy

Marta,

Let me tell you about me ! I was born and raised a Catholic, went through all the "rituals" (1st comm., etc..) even got married in the Church. After the kids dad and I separated, I was confused and lost. When my then church brought in a Priest that said WOMEN/GIRLS, could not be part of the services I left. I wanted my daughter to be part of whatever she desires in my church. I went to a great church that a friend recommended to me. I felt lost there, not because the church was big or anything, just lost. I now attend a Biker church, (non Denom) but under the umbrella of a Baptist Church. When I first began to learn about heaven, hell, etc. I would refer back to the Catholic thoughts and beliefs. But because GOD placed me in my first church, (stepping stone to phase 1 of my new life), I am now in phase 2. I have grown so much from the very first day I came here. MY pastor is an "old outlaw" as he calls himself. He spoke so much of how much GOD loves us and how we are forgiven for every since we have ever committed, will commit and continue to commit that I desired to learn more. I have been shown that the Devil is EVERYWHERE, just as GOD Is everywhere. I am learning the hard way that Satan/Devil will pick at you during your weakest moments, or at your weak points and harp on them. Especially if you are on fire for GOD! I am not good with Scripture, so I cannot tell you were to find anything in reference to this, but I can tell you that personally I see the devil everywhere. When we get in our flesh (worldly) its the devil that has tempted us because he knows our weaknesses. Just this past few weeks I struggled with a lot of things and when they asked if anyone needed prayer - I got up and literally felt someone pushing me on my chest (backwards) and also felt someone pushing me to continue the walk to the altar. I felt weak, I felt my spirit leave my body. I could see the struggle and the heaviness of it hurt. The devil knew my weakness and worked hard for three weeks on it, then when I was able to speak to someone else he got angry with me because I was trying to go back to GOD'S way. At the Altar, I was not able to stand - I felt as if I was being held up by someone - I was not aware of who was all laying hands on me - other than my Sister In Christ that was hugging me and praying the entire time. After the prayer - I was not able to walk on me own. I felt such peace. I know the Devil is real I can feel him, sense him, hear him, but that is me. Each one of us was created differently, but GOD loves us and wants us to reach out to him in our time of need. I am sorry but this is the only way I can relate to your questions and desire to learn more. I was told when I first became a CHristian - not Catholic CHristian - to read John. I was so in love with the book of John. THen in the past weeks, when I have known that the devil wanted me, was using me and I felt all alone, I was encouraged to read 1 & 2 nd Samuel. Great readings. I know I am rambling but I always felt that I was the ONLY Catholic to leave and relearn everything about the bible !

Well in my opinion, it would be good for you to read and study the Holy Bible. It is the living word and the Holy Spirit will bear witness. And if your church is teaching something different than what is in the scriptures then I would advise you to just talk to the leadership. But most importantly listen to the Holy Spirit. When God changed my life it started by me just reading the bible for myself and not having others tell me what it said. All the other ladies have done a good job listing scriptures, so as you read over them just pray and ask the Holy Spirit to show you.

In Luke 10:18-20 Jesus said, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy (satan), and nothing shall hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."

So in this passage Jesus said he saw satan fall, so this is one of the many that implies he is real. Here's another one, Job 1:6 "Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them." Now see here he(satan) is again standing before God in heaven.

This is only 2 of the many, but I say this... That if you're a child of God and you have been saved by the blood of Jesus... We do not fear the devil! Cause our God is bigger than the devil. He's like a bug under my shoe. And all you have to do is say in the name of Jesus. And that dumb ole' devil has to listen. I seen it to many times. He don't want to obey, but he has to.

For example, if your child is having nightmares. This is not from God... It is from the devil and it is a spirit of fear trying to attack your child and your family. So you say (pray) in the name of Jesus spirit of fear you have to go in the name of Jesus. Satan, you have to go in the name of Jesus. And he has to obey. That is one of the great things about our Jesus, when he paid the price it wasn't just so we could go to heaven but that we may be more than conquerors Romans 8:37.

The Bible clearly teaches in the gospels, that Jesus was tempted by the devil. How can that be the adamic nature in a purely Holy Spirit filled body? And all through the gospe;s it talks about Jesis casting out demons & evil spirits, where would they come from except the demons who were banished from heaven with Lucifer when he became the devil? I also believe Jesus actually refers to the devil in his conversations at times & HE would not, COULD NOT lie. Luke especially records many healings & miracles, look there.

I book that I highly reccomend everyone to read is 23 minutes in Hell. I'm not sure if I believe that the man actually went to Hell or not but I do believe that his portrayal of Hell is probably pretty accurate. I watched his sermon as well and I really gave me the kick in the pants that I needed. It was scary!

So yeah, I believe in Hell and the Devil. There are too many references to Hell and Lucifer, the Morning Star, or whatever you want to call it to deny it, in my opinion.

At the risk of sounding stupid I must ask: Dont you have a minister you can ask these questions too? It is one thing to ask us ladies with different beliefs but this is a question that really should go to your minister who is responsible for teaching you Gods word.

I agree with what has already been said. What you are being taught is not Biblical and I encourage you to seek out your information FROM THE BIBLE first, then compare what other people say to what the Bible says, then decide what you believe. I like to go to www.crosswalk.com and use their Bible search tools. You can put in words like "Devil" or "Satan" or "Hell" and see all the verses than mention that word. This really helps to find out what the Bible actually says. You will find that Jesus, Himself, spoke extensively on hell and it is NOT here in this world. The devil is real, though as another poster said, not a little red guy with a pitchfork! I will do some research and come back another day when I'm not already brain-dead-tired and post some references. :-)

Quoting Marybeth:

Are you attending a Jehovah's Witness church? I have studied alot about that religion. Heather was right on with everything that she said, I couldn't have said it better myself. But there are even more scriptures that talk about Hell. Get out your Concordance and dig! :)

No, I'm not a J.W. rather we attend a non-denom. church (it's more like a fellowship). It has an open pulpit so anyone can get up and testify or share something that they had read and what they learned from it but, if the Pastor feels that you are not moving in accordance to the Spirit then he'll kindly ask you to sit down and that you can talk to him after service about whatever it was that was on your mind/weighing on your heart. We're a Spirit filled bunch (much like the Pentecostal but with some differences). We're a very small community with ties to several fellowships throughout Canada and the US we've even located churches in France, Britain, the Philipines etc. that believe like we do without having been founded by anyone from our neck of the woods. It's been really reassuring to us as a community to see that God's working in other parts of the world the same way he's working with us.

Well, let me turn it around a bit and ask, do you believe in Heaven?

Do you believe Christ came to die for our sins so we can obtain Salvation?

I'm asking, because if there is no devil or hell, then what was the purpose of His sacrifice? Why would God send His only begotten Son to die for us?

Christ died to save our souls/forgiveness of our sins to give us everlasting life with Him. This implies that there is an alternative out there. And the fact that in Revelation, Christ (through John) tells us that He has the keys of hell and death confirms that. Revelation 20:14-15 carries this thought through, ""And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire."

As far as the devil, do I believe he is real? Yes. Do I think he's little red guy with pitchfork? No.

The book of Job tells us of conversations between satan and God.

I Peter 5:8-9 tells us: "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:"

Would you say that of yourself or of your spouse or your pastor, etc.? Would you say these people are roaming about looking to devour you in sin?

I Timothy 4:1-2 says, "1Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;"

Ephesians 6:12

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Basically, it comes down (for me) that if I'm going to believe in the Goodness of God, then I also need to believe in the wrath and judgement of God. If I believe in the good parts of the Bible then I have to believe in the "bad" or "scary" parts as well.

If I'm going to follow Christ, then it has to be with my whole heart, mind and soul.

That's why I believe what I do. Hope that helps. :)

So my beliefs I try to base directly on the Bible. But I am not perfect so don't take everything I say as gold, I encourage you to dig into your Bible and find out for yourself. But here is what I have always believed.

I do not believe the fire and brimstone, but the Bible does speak of the Lake of Fire being the second death. So I do not believe that Hell is right here on Earth. Here are some verses about that. Feel free to look them up in context.

Revelation 20:14-15

Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

That being said, I do not believe that satan will rule in hell, but be suffering right along side of everyone else. He might be on a power trip right now, but he when the end comes he will be put in his place, and he is no better then anyone else who will be there. He has influence on us here, and is very real, not something made up. He was in the garden of Eden with Adam and Eve, Revelations 12:9 says that the great dragon will be hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He will be hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. This shows us that Satan has followers called Demons. He might rule over them now, just as gang leaders rule over their gang, but it will come to an end. Matthew 13 has the parable of the sower and it is followed by the parable of the weeds. They are both explained later in the chapter. I really recommend reading it.

The Bible talks about Hell as being a fire that never goes out. I personally believe it will be burning eternally. Luke 16:19-31 talks about the rich man who was in Hell. He describes it as being in agony in the fire. It really is horrible to think about, but it is very real.

So that is a brief summery of what I believe and why. Let me know if you have any other questions. I hope it helped in someway.
