How do I throw a dedication for my first child?

I want to do a dedication but where I live infant baptism is the norm. So my issues are not knowing how to do a dedication, also I don't have a home church our pastor at the moment so I'd like to do it at home with just family and friends. Thanks Laura

I would do something like a low key baby shower. Send out invites to the people that you want to come, and I would ask your father or father-in-law (or other older Christian) to pray a blessing over the baby, and just ask that others would help you raise your baby in a godly way. State that your goal is to raise him/her in a Christian home, and to know Jesus as their Savior.

Then I always love making a Scripture book at special events. Have a notebook and ask everyone who comes to write a Scripture (and optional note) in it for the baby. It's great to go through and read the encouragement that others chose to share from Scripture. Or if it's a really small get together then you can write them on cards and make a collage. Maybe include a picture of the baby in the middle, or a group picture of everyone who came.

I do not know if this would work for a Baby Dedication, but when my family moved into the house we live in now(It also is the home my husband spent most of his growing up years living in with his family) I wanted to dedicate our home to God. So, I admit part of this may sound corny, waited until my Mother and Father -In-Law came for the first visit. At dinner that night, I used our place mats that had Bible Verses on them that talked about Gods Goodness. BEfore my husband said the Blessing for dinner, We had each person read their verses.

For a Baby Dedication, you would need to tweak this. You may want to make a cake or have one made that you wright on it a Bible verse about Children, Have you or dad say a Prayer stating your desire to Dedicate your Child to God, and ask the people present to Keep your family in their Prayers, as you endeavor to raise your child according to the Word of God. The wording is something you would be comfortable with and convey your beliefs.



One thing I would also do is to find a Church Home. I would not see any problems with doing the Dedication at home. Then again I do not have an training in this are except for the Sunday School, Church and Bible Study I do on my own. I hope this helps.
