How to teach 6 yr old about God?

Our pet just died. She's asking about death and what happens when someone dies. So I've talked to her about God and heaven. Are there any good children books out there to teach basic christian concepts?

Oh--there's so many...where to start? I would start with the Bible. Teach your daughter what it teaches about sin, death, salvation, and heaven. There are many great Children's Bible story books. I really liked the Beginner's Bible. Also, I really like Woof by Danae Dobson. It's not a Bible story book, but it teaches Biblical principles through stories about a dog, Woof. At the end of each story there are questions about the story that lead to God. I'm partial to this book because after reading one of the stories, my 3rd son accepted Jesus as his Savior at age 6! Look at under children's books and you will find many wonderful choices. Also, anything that Max Lucado wrote will be excellent. I choke back tears on almost all of his stories--he is a master storyteller.

There is one by Max Lucado about a butterfly... but I don't know the title...

I think CBD has a book about pets dieing pretty cheap. Be careful though, our kids were just asking about pets and animals in heaven the other day (we had a nest fall out of the tree and the 2 baby birds died). The Bible does not say if animals are in heaven. I tend to lean not since they are not created in His image with souls. But we talked about how in Matthew it says God know about the Sparrow falling and clothes the grass with flowers, etc.

In terms of people dieing, nows a great time to talk about how Jesus wants everyone to be in heaven with Him but people need to accept His gift of salvation. If someone doesn't know Jesus, how can Jesus invite him into heaven? Not scary like, but important. Our older kids (5 and almost 7) have that pretty well understood so now we've transitioned to why missionaries are important and how we can be a missionary right here, etc. It's such a fun age when they start seeking on their own more and more!!!

Do you go to church? If so her Sunday school teacher maybe able to help. My family and I have been going to church, 2, my youngest is almost 6. She knows that when something happens, they go to heaven to be with Jesus. Hope this helps.
