Mother-Daughter Time

Our daughter is 4 and will start pre-K on Thursday. Since I work full-time and we live 45 minutes away from my office, we don't get to spend much time together, so every minute we can, is precious.

On Sunday, we had to stop by the store for a few last-minute school supplies and a couple of things for home. Hannah is very high energy and usually helping push the cart while I "look out for {her} traffic," but on Sunday she decided to ride in the cart and was very well-behaved. She asked, periodically, throughout our excursion to look at the "glit gloss," which I finally deciphered to mean lip gloss, so I told her that we would look at it on our way out if she had good behavior, but made it very clear that we were not buying any lip gloss.

Once we stopped to look at the lip gloss, she (as any 4-year-old would do) asked to buy some. I reminded her that we were there only to look and not to buy. Then a light bulb went on. I explained to her that Mommy had a recipe to make homemade lip gloss at my office and we could make some on Monday evening.

On the way in yesterday morning, she reminded me not to forget the recipe and then reminded me once more when I was leaving from dropping her off at child care. Needless to say, I knew if I forgot that recipe, I'd loose my mother-of-the-year status and probably have to drive the whole 45 minutes back to my office to get it! Well, I DIDN'T forget it and we made cherry lipgloss last night, then decorated her new backpack with butterflies!

We had the best time!!!! Here's the recipe for those of you who are curious.

Homemade Lip Gloss

2 T vegetable shortening
1 T flavored, unsweetened kool-aid (we used sugar-free, but it didn't dissolve well)

Combine in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave until melted, stirring occassionally. Pour into clean film canister or we used an empty glucometer strip container. Place in freezer until solid. Can be applied with fingers or lip brush.

If you see this, leave this form field blank.

Dear Pam, thank you so much for the Lip Gloss recipe. We are surely gonna try it as soon as!!! It's so nice to read of other mommies also struggling to make time with their girls. Your daughter is lucky to have you, enjoy her and all the time you spend together... xx

Pam my 2 "LITTLE GIRLS" are 21 and 25 years old. I do not know where the time goes.
Amber is soo right, your little girl will remember these things. Our oldest learned to cook by cooking with me from the time she was 8 years old. She just graduated from Culinary School. We have talked about cooking as a chid with me. Our youngest will graduate in December of this year. She has such a heart for the underprivileged, again she say mom and dad give to the red cattle at Christmas time.
Your little girl is blessed to have you for her mom.
