My 3 month old is exclusively breast fed and in the last month she goes 3-4 days without pooping. I need to know if this is normal? She is not in any pain, and is very happy still. Should I be concerned?

My daughter can go up to 8 days without pooping and my doctor says everything is perfectly normal. I wouldn't worry unless she shows signs of pain or discomfort. I actually find it funny because when is is a day from what we call "poop day" you know it simply because she farts and OH HEAVEN does it smell awful! LOL! :) ;P

Ask your doctor! My daughter is 3 1/2 months and I've recently went through the same thing was getting worried about her not passing stools very often! She told me to call back if it reaches day 5! I've been breastfeeding until recently now breastfeeding and supplementing! I wouldn't give your baby a lot of juice because like my 2 yr old still can't have much because acid burns his bottom and will get bad diaper rash! I was told to put a little dark caro syrup in bottle with my others, but check with doctor before taking too many suggestions! Good luck, your doing fine, and keep up the great job! After reading the posts remember getting sepositories for my daughter! Make sure you get the kind for babies and use 1/2 of one!

I guess the first question I have is, are you nursing her, if you are and the poop is not hard, don't worry about it. If you are bottle feeding and the poop is really hard than you have a problem and should check with the Dr. If she has between 6 and 9 wet diapers a day and seems healthy otherwise. you don't have anything to worry about.

My daughter regularly would go almost a week without pooping when she was breastfed and when she had formula, although when we switched to Kirkland formula she went every day.
She was never constipated or gassy. She would just store it up then have one major diaper.

I suggest strongly that you speak to your pediatrician about this . Also give her lots of apple juice & if she's really not going on that 4th day then give her waterd down prune juice (half & half) my daughter was real constipated at 4 mo old & her grandma told me to do this & it worked

My daughter is the same way. Our pediatrician suggested apple juice. I breast feed her but have begun supplementing....this has made it every other day. If it ever goes to 5 days I used suppositories to work things along. Good luck, hope this helps!

If she is breast feeding this is normal, Monique did the same.If she's not, but she's not in any pain, don't panic.Start to worry if she's in pain.

My husband's family has this same pattern, and so did my daughter. I wouldn't worry about it until she gets on solid food. If it continues then you may notice her straining to go, then you can be sure to get her extra apple juice or avoid things like cheese. But as long as she's content and on breast milk, as long as she's not just passing hard turds, she should be fine.

Thank you ladies so much! I feel better knowing that it is not something that I should be alarmed about. Being a first time mom, it's encouraging to know that there are others moms out there to help me! Thank You SO much!

That's totally normal. The nutrients in breast milk are absorbed much more efficiently than formula, so the stools don't come as often because there's just not as much "wasted" by the body. Since she seems happy and not uncomfortable, I wouldn't worry about it.

I freaked out when my daughter did that! :) But like everyone else said - it's perfectly normal. Just a couple of additional things our pediatrician told us - 1) make sure it's not coming out like little pebbles when she finally does go and 2) if you see that she's trying to go, but nothing's happening, try wiping her bottom. (Has something to do with them pushing and clenching at the same time.)

if it becomes a problem the pediatritions always recomend a drop olive oil in the milk only a bottle a day to keep the tummy loose

I'm pretty sure this is entirely normal. Breastmilk contains few solids, most of which are utilized by her growing little body. Breastmilk is a highly efficient food and so produces little waste. As long as she is peeing frequently and pooping at least once a week there shouldn't be any reason for concern.

hello my son did the same thing. i was worried and asked my doctor. he said as long as it is not over five days it is ok. My son went through about 2 months and once he started on baby food he was pooping everyday. i think as long as she is happy and not in pain i woulnt worry to much. just keep an eye that it doesnt go past five days with no poop. if so then i would call your doc and see what to do next.
