There has been a lot of stuff in the media lately about President Obama's speech to the students of our nation. The government is saying it is to encourage kids to stay in school, but others are saying it is a bad thing. I don't really understand everything, and my child's school said they didn't know anything about it.... Have any of you heard anything, or can you tell me why this is such a good or bad thing?

I think alot of people are taking this speech to far President Obama has kids of his own so do you think he would allow someone to speak to them about homosexuality and why would he be speaking about this to 1st graders? This man was put in the White House for a reason and only God knows that reason so for us to call our self christians we have to belief that God has his purpose for everything. I don't understand how people want to dictate what President Obama has to say to their kids but they let them watch all kind of nonsense on TV and the internet that's what we should be monitering with our kids..President Obama cares about the kids of the united states I think alot of people are getting him mixed up with other presidents..The devil only exist in people eyes that don't have 100% faith in God.. When these kids are at school they don't let you know what movie they will be letting them watch they just let them watch it, at lease he did announce..But a majority of the problem with everything is who this man is and what color he represents and it's not of Christians to act this way..If we call our selves Christians and we talk this way what's different about us than people that don't call themselves Christians..Nothing...

My school still hasn't said if they are going to show it, so I haven't made my decision yet. I am thinking about getting a sitter to stay with my kids so that I can go to the school and listen to it with 1st grade son. This way if we need to we can leave part way through and I will be there to know what to say to him. If it is truly a speech about staying in school then I would love for him to hear it, but if it something bigger. Something about a one world religion and putting aside our own beliefs I can't allow it to preached to my 7 year old.... For now, we are going to study 1 Timothy 2 as a family this weekend.

The speech shouldn't be such a secret. If it is just about education, then what is the problem with letting the parent's see that speech before hand.
The main issue I think we are all seeing is that he is NOT a follower of Jesus. He says he is but his actions don't measure up. With someone, regardless of who they are, comes along and tries to sneak in to speak to our children without our say, is a problem. For all I know, the devil is making a speech to my children, and I am not going to lay down and hope for the best or that my children will make the best choices when listening. I'm sorry, my Kindergartner and my Second grader are not equipped to deal with discernment at this age. Heck, we have trouble doing that ourselves as adults.
As for what is so wrong with accepting people of homosexuality, here are some verses you should know:

Leviticus 18:22-23 "You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination. Nor shall you mate with any animal, to defile yourself with it. Nor shall any woman stand before an animal to mate with it. It is perversion."
Leviticus 20:13 "If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them."
The list goes on...
1 Corinthians 6:9-10
Romans 1:24-27
1 Timothy 1:9-10

Where in the bible does it say to accept such behavior? It's like telling our kids to accept murders and people who have intercourse with animals! Acceptance and love are totally different things. I teach my children that being homosexual is wrong, but those people need our prayers and love.
I know many gay people. I have a lesbian friend who knows her feelings are not according to God's will and she suppresses those feelings because she knows they are wrong. It's a struggle for her yes, but she wants to do God's will in her life.

On Fox and Friends this morning it was reported a communique was released from the Whitehouse stating a copy of the speech will be released Monday.Didn't say what time, nor to whom.
The speech wasn't a problem until lesson plans were made up for afterward. If Obama wants to simply encourage children to stay in school,I find no fault in it.However,it's not his job nor place to present lesson plans. Each class has their own teachers and assistants. That's what caused some parents to have second thoughts. We are aware of other classroom materials being used and or introduced concerning alternative lifestyles to little ones. That I oppose.I am a bible believing mom and grandmom and I don't want my little girl taught it's normal and acceptable when God says it's not.I teach mine to love and accept the person, but not to accept the lifestyle.I think it is best to observe the old adage, that people who live in glass houses should not throw stones. The whole thing is political,it would be no matter what label a president wears.Bush did this, too. He went and read to kids in a library and it was shown all over.
The difference was his wife is a teacher and she made reading, literacy, her project as First Lady, therefore it was more readily accepted. Also, there has been plenty of name calling, enough for every one.
All of that is neither here nor there,We are discussing our children, and as a parent,I don't want anyone indoctrinating my child or grandchildren. They are not property of the state. This is America, where we are suppose to be free to raise our children according to our own beliefs and values, period. We are conservative Christians in my family, because we view life through a biblical worldview, plain and simple.I will be watching and listening for the released copy of the speech and any other information concerning this subject. At this point I have no plans to keep my child home. However,I reserve the right to do so should I feel the need.Let us all be in prayer over this, not make the mistake of leaving God out.It can be a peaceful day if we yield it to Him.
God bless you all.

I'm sure the content of any speech to children will be appropriate. If you go to the Republican moms they are literally rabid about it. And totally inappropriate name calling. I believe education is an important mandate and the continuation of the ' no child left behind' policy. I wouldn't worry about it. It's not a political thing and should not be thought of as. And what's so wrong with encouraging acceptance of all members of our society ?

Julie, do you know where you saw that they had toned down the speech? I have done so much research today I don't know what to think any more. I can't find anything that has any facts to it :( Just that he wants to tell the students to stay in school or that he is going to be the next Hitler. I would love some facts.

I spoke with our school today and they are letting the kids see it. I did a lot of research online and found out the the white house put out statement that "toned down" the speech after meeting so much conservative critisism. This in itself makes me nervous. My husband and I decided that our children will not be attending school that day, one, because I don't trust that the speech will just be about staying in school and studying hard. Secondly, I think that in these highly charged political times it is 100% inappropriate for a school to not notify parents and get parental consent for something like this. It is one thing for a president to make a speech to one school, but unheard of to address the whole nations student body. Not only that but the Department of Education has sent all of the teachers "talking points" for after the speech. My 1st grade son told his teacher today that he didn't want to hear President Obama speak because he is "not respectful of what my mom, dad and me believe in."

So update on my school anyway. The school district is letting the schools know about it now, and each school and each teacher can chose for themselves. We are suppose to get letters about it tomorrow. Kind of short notice if you ask me. But they said that if it was shown in my child's classroom then I can request that he gets taken somewhere else during that time, and there will be a whole group of students doing other activities so he wont be singled out.

From what I have read it is designed to encourage students to stay in school, but there is nothing about the contents of the speech. Not even the suggested lesson plans that go with it hint to what it is about. I agree that I don't want my kids to listen to him encourage homosexuality or anything else not of God. It would be nice to know what he is going to say. That would clear up a lot of the issues. But the other concern I have found floating around on the net is that this is how Hitler started taking over Germany. By getting the kids on his side through the school. I'm not saying that that is the intention, but the secrecy here really isn't helping President Obama at all.

Here is a link from the U.S. Department of Education http://www.ed.gov/admins/lead/academic/b...
The contents of his speech are not included there. As a Christian parent, I worry he is going to talk about gay acceptance and things that are not of God. I would of liked a letter stating what he is going to say exactly, but I doubt that will happen. Many parent's are choosing not to send their child to school that day. The Christians I do know who are letting their kids go, are teaching them to be discerning about what he says. It makes me uneasy. Why say it just to the children?

My thought is that the answer could well depend on whether you are a liberal or conservative Christian.I am conservative and vote according to my understanding of God's word. But,nowhere have I seen or heard what this speech is actually going to say. So,there's nothing to judge as of yet.I want to know myself as I have a first grader, too.I do not want my child indoctrinated in a public school, whether it be by a president or anyone else.

If I learn anything about it,I will try my best to get back here and post again. If anyone else knows,I,too, would appreciate a "heads up"concerning the contents of the speech.
