Hi ya'll! This thread is a "has anyone" been there, and what did you do as well as asking for help and advice. I have been convicted that I need to eat healthier and take care of myself. I don't know if it is just not having the total support that I need, (my husband says we eat healthy enough..... I disagree with him.) Or if it is "laziness" or what on my part. I have the tendancy to try to change to much at one time, and get overwhelmed. I am not sure how to prioritize what needs to be changed, but I do know that my eating and exercising habits need to change. I don't want to bore anyone with more than that, but I am so discouraged right now that I am falling into a mild bout of depression~ which never makes anything better. Any thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated!

Hi everyone, Not only is God Good He has a sense of humor. Today I was eating tuna fish, onions, and mayo with olive oil in it, and crackers. I was at the point where I was not hungry any more but I had not stopped eating. You know the mindless type of eating. Well the two little children I was asked to watch for a few hours(the children of our oldest daughter's best friend since 3rd grade) so their mom could go on a second job interview. I was still sorta eating and the little girl, she will be 2 in June told me she needed some crackers. I asked her if she wanted any tuna fish and really expected her to say "No" Well God is Good, my little buddy said yes. I gave her a small amount expecting her to not like it. But she did. In the course of about 15 minutes she had eaten about 2 teaspoon of tuna fish. Just enough time had gone by that I was able to realize that I was not hungry. I through out the rest of the tuna fish. I just had to share this with you, I hope my breakthrough motivates something to stop eating when they are no longer hungry. Babies do this, I have to believe this is Gods Plan for weight loss. along with exercise. Happy taking care of ourselves.

Since you shared your user name, I will attempt to find you, Anne.

Also, since there are others who are trying out Spark, why not let us know each other's user names? I am clhbenson. Jennifer, thanks for the tip. (Books are both my husband's and mine "budget buster", so I will pick up that book next time we go on a trip!

Quoting Cheryl- Chris:

Anne, wondering if you have started your profile on SparkPeople. If you have, what is your user name, that way I can add you to my list of friends.

Hi, I am stumbling my way through right now. I looked at it some yesterday but was not able to get back to the site until now. my user name anniejean1. I am new to this kind of thing, will I need to accept you like on FB? How many more weeks until bikini season? Like I would ever belong in a bikini, I have scar from one side to the other just under the bust line due to Open Heart surgery at 8. A whole other story.

I was given a book called The Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood by William Sears. I am not a huge Sears fan but this book is very well written and motivating. It explains how food works in your body and really helps you see why healthy eating/living is important. It is alos written for parents for help in raiseing healthy kids, so the focus comes off you and onto doing something good for your kids. But for me it was a HUGE motivator for me for two reasons; to be a positive influence on my children & so I can live long enough, happily enough, healthy enough to BE there for my kids and even my grandkids. It is hugely frustrating still, I have a medical condition that requires medicine that has the side effect of weight gain so I constantly struggle, but when I think about the changes I AM making (setting goals one at a time) it helps me persevere. I am excited to try out SparkPeople!

Yes, sometimes, we don't realize how blessed we are! I am enjoying SparkPeople!!! Thank you so much Karri, and even those who replied for support!

Yes, I understand about wishing the weather was warmer~ we have warm days, and then cold days. I tend to bundle the boys when I am in need of a major break from the house!

When it's cold outside, I usually create a break within my house for the whole family.  I'll decorate the house to look like a Hawaiian Luau, make some yummy snacks, hide the TV, and just bring the vacation home! :) Loads of fun and it's a great escape for a cheap price. hehe

Hi Cheryl, I can totally relate. The one thing that is different at my house is my husband is  Always "suggesting" we eat healthier. I an 54 and have had heart surgery in 1963. Because of the kind of heart problem I was born with effected the  cartilage in my hips, knees and shoulders. I have had both hips replaced and am due to have my first shoulder replacement in July. BUT I STILL CAN NOT GET IT THROUGH MY THICK HEAD that I need to lose weight and exercise. I did not add all of this to get sympathy, when I look around even in my own church I am soo Blessed have conditions that can be fixed. i am also going to check out the web site Karri mentioned. I will be Praying for you. Anne

www.kraftfoods.com has a section called "budget wise" and they have healthy living recipes and 1 bag, 5 dinners.  I use it ALOT.  We are gradually switching to organic foods.  We started out switching our fruits/vegetables, then our meats, now we are switching our breads/snacks.

As for the exercise, take a brisk walk in the morning, or while children are napping, do a low-impact aerobics routine for about 20 min.  OR you can take the kids out with you, everyone get some exercise!! :) (I just wish it was warmer here. :P)

Thanks! I checked out allrecipes.com, and I will be going back and using it.

The one habit to change is also good! Thanks!!!!!

[deleted account]

I think you have to do what works for you. Someone mentioned a friendly competition among girldriends, and weigh-ins. That's not for me- lol! (inwardly cringing :)

People are all different. Some LOVE to count calories, some don't (ME!)

I prefer to make my goals about things I CAN control, like how long I walk each day, or how many cups of veggies or fruit I eat each day instead of a goal to lose X pounds by X date.

Since you are really gung-ho at the beginning and lose interest quickly you might try just picking ONE little habit to change per week, such as walking each day.

Just focus on that for a week or two, then choose another habit, like eating more veggies.

Just my .02 ...

Good luck!

I use allrecipies.com. I can search through the recipies and find healthy ones. Otherwise we would probably live off of hotdogs and tuna fish..... Also exersizing isn't my strong suit, but if you can find a work out video that is fun, invite your kids to do it with you. When I was little my mom had one that I loved, and I would ask her all the time if we could work out. I'm sure she got more out of it then me, but I loved it! My 4 year old son loves to exersize with me. He has been doing it since he was 3. Your own kids can't bail on you! They might lose intrest after a while, but hopefully you will have made it a habbit by then. I hope that helps.

This will sound like an excuse, but it's not. I have tried an accountability partner or buddy. They end up bailing on me. Otherwise, I would do it. I guess that is why I turned to online friends!!!!

I can relate!! I know when I try to change too much, I get sick of it quicker and my family complains. My husband doesn't think we need to eat differently, but then he complains that all his pants are too tight. duh!! :-) I've started with buying the low-fat or fat-free options if available. Most things taste the same! And then bought a healthy cookbook instead of always using the church or community cookbooks that most people have. I've found some healthy websites that are still normal family food like www.allrecipes.com and www.eatingwell.com. I try to find recipes that are the same types of things we've always eaten, but made healthier. Just having the nutritional info beside the recipe helps a lot! We don't eat healthy meals every meal, but after a while I've noticed I don't crave the high fat, greasy foods anymore. Keeping a positive attitude is very important!!

I think it helps to have a "buddy" or accountability partner to do it with that way when you don't feel like it, they can boost you up.  If not hubby, maybe a girlfriend and you can start a friendly competition over who can lose weight the healthiest, swap healthy recipes (if you don't have any - take turns going online to find some), go on walks or to a gym.  The idea would be for each of you to take turns calling each other and checking up, have a weekly weigh-in, etc.  Finally, have a goal and a celebration for meeting that goal!  Have fun with it!
