I'm looking for a parenting class or books that will help me and my husband get a better grip on our role as Christian parents. Let me know the favorite thing you learned through the book/class that you suggest... Thanks!

The best Book I can recommend is the Bible it is our instruction manual.  It rally bothers me when you hear people us the excuse that " kids don't come with instruction mauals" Yes God gave us the best manual of all...thats the best I have...that and a concordance works great!!!

I like anything fro the Sears. they are Christian pediatricians and I love their books. They range from Discipline, to vaccines, to nutrition and general baby growth. They're great. Also "the Ministry of Motherhood" OUr ladies group at church studied this book and it really helped me view my role as a christian mom so much better. It helped me see how Christ loved and disciplined his disciples and how I should do the same. I always feel guilty if I yell and guilty if I don't, (somehow thinking it makes me a better mom if I do) but it's a great book about gently and lovingly leading our children

My husband and I host a small group for our church which concentrates on marriage and parenting. There are a lot of great resources available and small group / individual study resources available at Christian bookstore. We love anything by Tim Kimmel (check out the website www.familymatters.net. Not only does it have a list of his books (Raising Truly Great Kids, Little House on the Freeway, Why Chritian Kids Rebel)to name a few; it also has suggested books by other Christian writers on topics like talking to your kids about sex, strong willed children and your child's love language. They also have a free newsletter that you can subscribe to. You might also consider talking to your pastor about their reccomendations. Hope this helps!

Anything by Dr. Kevin Leman. His latest, Have a New Kid by Friday, is a gem. I just heard him speak last night.  Everything he writes is based on Scripture. Additionally, if you have the opportunity to attend "Growing Kids God's Way" by Gary Ezzo. It is a book but only offered when you take the class through a church study group. Amazing.

I you have a boy I'd recommend Dr James Dobson's "Bringing up Boys", its just fantastic and when I come to the end I just start from the beginning again.  Although not from a Christian viewpoint, Steve Biddulph's "Raising Boys" is just as good.

In South Africa (Afrikaans) I'd recommend 2 books from Hettie Brtz: "Kweek kinders met karakter" and " Kweek gesonde gesag".

I'm finding the "Love and Logic" line of books and products to be very helpful. They also have a free e-newsletter. (Loveandlogic.com) They emphasize letting your child(ren) make mistakes while they're young, in order to learn natural consequences. The biggest thing I have to work on is to not give so many reminders to my five-year-old.

Raising Positive Kids in a Negative World by Zig Ziglar

We actually listened to the tape/cd series.  The things it teaches are all invaluable, but probably the most valuable is developing those needed communication skills and lines with your kids.  It is Christian-based and covers a multitude of topics from discipline to sex ed.  Hope this helps.

To Train Up a Child - www.nogreaterjoy.org. They are a Christian couple who raised 5 children who are all married and now having kids of their own. They explain the role of parents and the ins and outs of discipline all from a Biblical perspective. The reason I like them so much is that they give great practical ideas and ways to implement Biblical truth. They also have 3 books - No Greater Joy Volumes 1,2,3 that piggyback on To Train Up a Child and they offer even more practical tips for parenting, again all Biblically based. I know they do seminars in the States, so you can check their website to see if they would be in your area.

The other good book I would suggest is Shepherding A Child's Heart. This also presents the Biblical role of parents and discipline and has some practical examples. To Train Up a Child is my favourite as I found it to be more practical in nature, however Shepherding a Child's heart got me going in the right direction as a parent (I had read it first).

The Ezzos also have a good series Growing Kid's God's Way and they are helpful in implementing routines, understanding child development and needs, our valuable roles as parents and some practical ideas on discipline. They also have a website, http://www.gfi.org/

Blessings to you on your parenting journey!
