Mothers Day Message 2010
Four Keys That Evidence We Are Gods Treasured Possession
Mothers day is a day set aside for the world to let their mothers know how much they are loved, how special they are and that they are truly appreciated. A special day set aside to tell our mums that they are a treasured possession. This Mothers day God also wants to let us know that we are a treasured possession, and not just any treasured possession, we are his treasured possession. Not just as mothers, although that is definitely where he is starting, but as mothers & fathers, sisters & brothers, whether older or younger, as his people we are his treasured possession. Please turn with me to Deuteronomy chapter 7 starting at verse 6.
De 7:6 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession. 7 The LORD did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. 8 But it was because the LORD loved you and kept the oath he swore to your forefathers that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
The Message puts it way:
De 7:6 Do this because you are a people set apart as holy to GOD, your God. GOD, your God, chose you out of all the people on Earth for himself as a cherished, personal treasure. 7 GOD wasn’t attracted to you and didn’t choose you because you were big and important—the fact is, there was almost nothing to you. 8 He did it out of sheer love, keeping the promise he made to your ancestors. GOD stepped in and mightily bought you back out of that world of slavery, freed you from the iron grip of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
We are Gods treasured possession, firstly let take a look at that word for treasured.
The word in Hebrew is Sapan meaning; Treasures, treasured, delight, delightful, cherished, lovely, pleasing & of value.
As the Message version says we are Gods cherished personal treasure. We are cherished by God we have value to God, not because we are big and important, or more numerous than other peoples for as we can clearly see we are not more numerous, we are not bigger and more important than anyone else. However God has four keys that show we are God’s treasured possession, the first is found in verse 6a in the NIV it says.
De 7:6 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God.
1) We are a Holy People
We are a people Holy to the LORD, it’s not that we established ourselves as that; it is something God has done within us.
De 28:9 The LORD will establish you as his holy people, as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands of the LORD your God and walk in his ways. God will, has done and is continuing to establish us as His holy people.
Isa 62:12 They will be called the Holy People, the Redeemed of the LORD; and you will be called Sought After, the City No Longer Deserted. The Holy people of the LORD, the redeemed, does that sound like us, because it is. Have you ever felt deserted, well don’t feel that way any longer, because we are no longer deserted, but we are sought after.
2Thes 1:10 On the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marvelled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you. God is establishing us as holy and his being glorified in us will be something to marvel at.
Not only are we a Holy people, the second key, is found in verse 6a the message version putting it this way.
De 7:6 Do this because you are a people set apart
2) We have been Set Apart
You, me all of us here have been set apart, by God.
1Ch 23:13 Aaron was set apart, he and his descendants for ever, to consecrate the most holy things, to offer sacrifices before the LORD, to minister before him and to pronounce blessings in his name for ever. There is a reason to us being set apart and it starts with ministering before God, within our own lives, no matter what level we are at, we can minister before God, as we’ve heard before Saved to Serve.
Ps 4:3 Know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself.
Know that, KNOW THAT God set us apart for himself….His treasured possession.
Ro 1:1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God—
We have not all been called to be apostles, but we have all been set apart by God, to God and for God.
If we look at Deuteronomy 7:7 it says that The LORD did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.
The message saying it this way,
GOD wasn’t attracted to you and didn’t choose you because you were big and important—the fact is there was almost nothing to you.
So God didn’t set his affection on us or choose us because of anything we did, however he did choose us, which is our third key today.
3) We are Chosen
Jas 2:5 Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? We’ve heard it said before that God went to the bottom of the barrel, well that would be poor in the eyes of the world, however He sure has made us rich in faith and not only that, to inherit the kingdom he promised, which means going to spend eternity with God, but also all those promises that He has given for us to enjoy here on earth.
1Pe 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
We might not all be highly educated, None of us millionaires, well not yet anyway and we’re not all descended from royalty, but we have been chosen to be rich in faith, to declare Gods praises and to inherit what has been promised.
Why? Let look at verse 8.
Deut 7:8 But it was because the LORD loved you and kept the oath he swore to your forefathers that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
Now I really like how the message puts it,
8 He did it out of sheer love, keeping the promise he made to your ancestors. GOD stepped in and mightily bought you back out of that world of slavery, freed you from the iron grip of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
He did it out of sheer love. Which is my fourth point, we are loved.
4) We are Loved
Sure we’re loved, by spouses, kids, family & friends, but not only that we are loved by God. Sheer love, do you know what sheer means?
Sheer, the Oxford dictionary puts it as, complete and without restriction, absolute freedom, transparent, being only what it seems to be, obvious, simple, mere and downright.
That’s Gods love for us, it’s complete and without restriction, it is only what it seems to be and it’s His absolute freedom to love us.
Joh 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Now that’s love without restriction.
Ps 33:18 But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love. Unfailing love, is that not complete
Ps 36:10 Continue your love to those who know you, your righteousness to the upright in heart.
Ro 8:39 Neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Now that is sheer unfailing love, that nothing can separate us from. That love that is bringing us out of slavery, well we’re not in slavery you might say. Well we’ve all been enslaved at some point or another, slaves to finances, slaves to sickness, we’ll God is still in the process of bringing us out of those bondages, freeing us from the iron grip, not of the king of Egypt, but of those things that would try and have kingship over our lives.
Also that love that is still fulfilling promises in our lives, new homes, new cars, new jobs, prosperity, health, ministries.
So a quick recap, Today God has given us four keys that show we are his treasured possession.
1) We are a Holy People
2) We are Set apart
3) We are Chosen
4) We are Loved
De 26:18 And the LORD has declared this day that you are his people, his treasured possession as he promised.
Ps 135:4 For the LORD has chosen Jacob to be his own, Israel to be his treasured possession.
And we can put ourselves in there,
For the LORD has chosen Rebekah to be his own, Anne to be his treasured possession.
And again what does treasured mean?
The word is Sapan meaning; Treasures, treasured, delight, delightful, cherished, lovely, pleasing & of value.
For the Lord has chosen Heather to be of value, Sarah to be his delight.
Today as mothers we might receive gifts and cards or be taken out for lunch as a token of our families appreciation, reminding us that to them we are a treasure, but let us not forget the gift God is giving to all of us today, the thing he wants us to be reminded of, and that is as dearly loved as we are by others, friend and family, and as much as we are cherished and treasured by them, we are his, we are God’s delight, pleasing and of value to him, cherished by him, and as much as I love the gifts I’ve been blessed with today there isn’t anything that compares to being God’s treasured possession.
Happy Mothers Day!
