What do you think of a mother who lets a 3, 5, and 9 year old watch spiderwick? I feel like that movie is an introduction to witchcraft...the circle-the chants etc..

when my kids see something on tv (ghosts, vampires etc on scooby doo or something) I always ask them if they think that is real, and the same can go with this. We keep God in our daily lives and talk about what we watch. The kids will usually point out something that they think is inappropriate on tv (someone sassing, hurting someone, feelings, etc) and my 6 year old son knows what language is not acceptable in their cartoons(name calling, stupid, hateful, and such) and will usually change it himself to something before I have to. if you have seen it and dont feel its appropriate for your kids, then I agree, give them an alternative. and good for you monitoring your kids' viewing!

i've never seen the movie...nor have i read the dragons in our midst. but rebekah has the right idea. if it's the fantasy that they are into then how about suggesting the 'chronicals of narnia' books. they were written by c.s. lewis who was a christian. and they are loosly based on the Bible. you obviously have to use your imagination here but that's why i say loosly. my husband is reading the entire series to our almost 4 year old right now. and we have bought the movies and as they finish each book they watch the movie. she loves them and i feel good knowing that she's reading something good. i don't like anything about witchcraft either. good luck.

Introduce the books "Dragons in Our Midst" to the children that can read.  They are Christian books that have much of the witch stuff, but shows how God is more powerful and can overthrow them.  Very good books.  I give to these our kids who read Harry Potter at our church.

The other thing I would do is talk with the mother about the content in that movie.  I've seen the movie myself and I definitely not let a child watch this movie, especially as young as this mom has.  In the DVD version, there is a special feature that the producer says everything in the movie is "true" and then gives much explanation about it, very scary in my opinion.  The mother should be aware of what dangers it could present and let her make her decision based off the knowledge she gains - she may not know.
