Christmas trees

So I know that some of us have discussed this before, but I am finally doing it this year. We will not have a Christmas tree. My husband and the boys are going to build a manger to lay our gifts around. My reasoning?

When we talked about this before, we discussed the verses in Jeremiah (10:3-4) that helped me make my decision. Some people say those verses are irrelevant and out of context, but I disagree. I think it is extremely relevant. I do not like the kids kneeling around a tree Christmas morning, and the song "O Christmas Tree" makes this even worse. The Christmas tree is honestly an idol at Christmas (maybe not for everyone, but I know it is for a lot of people, including our family). And also I love the thought of us laying our gifts at Christ's feet. I think it will help us to keep our focus on Jesus, the reason we are giving gifts, and hopefully our focus will be more on Him than on the presents themselves. I have also thought about doing a Jesse tree. I think that would be neat... but haven't decided for sure on that...I know people who decorate their tree only with ornaments about Christ. Each ornament has a story, or plays a part in the Christmas story (a shepherds staff, gold, myrrh...) I think that's cool, and a great way to make sure the focus stays on Christ, but I still can't get past the songs praising the Christmas tree.

So that's what we are doing this year and why. How are you all handling it this year?
(I will obviously not judge you either way, Romans 14. This is the first year we aren't having one, and 1 Corinthians 10:23)
...whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. ~ 1 Corinthians 10:31

Hi Heather, this is really interesting and somethig that I have never really thought about before. I would really miss having a tree, my son and I spend the day after thanksgiving decorating it as it's something that we enjoy doing together. The Angel that goes on top of our tree we talk about the angel that appeared to the shepards telling them of the savior that had been born. My son goes to a Christian school and we faithfully go to church and we very much keep Christ at the center of our celebrations. Chase understands that Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of Christ and it's a special time to honor him. We read of Jesus' birth on Christmas morning and Chase loves candy canes and we always talk about the story of the Legend of the Candy Cane and what the red and white stripes on the candy cane stand for. I do think that Christmas has become way to commercialized and its all about the expensive gifts, etc. So you bring up an interesting point. I had never considered our tree as an "idol". Thanks for sharing this Heather, you have given me something to think about.
Merry Christmas to you and your family!

I never had a christmas tree not once and I was never taught why. My parents did not agree on the subject so it was never brought up... they have a rule that if they are not both in agreement on something it isn't done until they are. Anyway, I have always wanted one - just the thought about having the children see the presents and stuff. I then had the dilema about whether to get a real one or a fake one ... we couldn't decide my husband and I so we still don't have one. We've been married 8 years and haven't had one all this time so I'm not sure if this is gonna be the year or not.

We have went back and forth on celebrating Christmas itself, so we have done without a tree before and will do so again this year.
We want to start focusing more on God's Biblical Holidays/feasts, and not man made rituals/traditions.

I'm not judging. Just want people to know the facts so they can make up their own minds.

I think it's great that you decided not to have a tree. That's the biggest part of the pagan influence.

I haven't really decorated for Christmas for a couple of years now since my kids grew up. But I always spend it with family and exchange gifts.

I do know the origins, but we have discussed it and we want to celebrate the birth of our Savior. We don't see the point of picking a random day to do so. We celebrate our birthdays, we can't leave Him out. His birth was far more important than ours!
