Very good, Agatha. We each learn differently. My husband has to hear the words out loud, I have to actually see the words, and some have to have both. When children are learning to read, they are so focused on pronouncing the words right that they haven't got a clue as to what the story line is. This will remedy itself as she gets more adept at reading. My grandson has a hard time focusing--he's like a flea on a hot griddle ;) So we have been saying 'focus', and he stops immediately and thinks, then usually gets it. Last night he was supposed to be getting his coat on to go home. He was being silly and carrying on, and I said 'Grant, focus! What did I just tell you?' And he thought a minute and said 'zip my coat'. So he heard it, it just hadn't worked it's way from his ears to his fingers ;)

Teaching children is sometimes nerve-wracking and frustrating, but it is TRAINING. You have to have the patience of a saint and the fortitude of a lion in order to get them raised. I think if I could go back in time and tell my younger self one word while I was raising the kids, it would be 'patience'. Repetition, consistency and patience.

hello tina. i remember that i was the same way with reading. i had to be in a quiet, undisturbed area with no one bugging me to be able to absorb what i was reading. often times, i would be focused on reading every single word correctly that i didn't pay enough attention to the actual words. other times, i would be stuck re reading the same sentence ten times before i finally got it. for me, the key was to be able to read it out loud on my own pace. that way i was hearing myself. try to allow her to go to her own room for reading and tape herself so that perhaps she can play it back and start to absorb the words instead of just reading them.

I am Lianna. I also live in Vegas. I have been happily married to my hubby of 8 years and have 2 (3) children. (Jocelyn Marie who would have been 8, she was still-born in 2002). I have a great relationship with them and have found lots of great Christian teen reading material at Christian bookstores. Well, it looks like from all the posts, that Claudia has probably found a few Christian friends. I, too, like others posting here, would love to connect to a Christiam mommy or two on here. I have three little boys and have been struggling to make close friendships with another Christian mom or two in my local area.
I want to offer a few ideas for you Claudia or anyone else reading this who want ideas for teaching the Bible to their children. At Christianbook.com or any other Christian literature website, you can get lots of ideas for childrens' devotionals. I bought the Ergermeirers Bible and read to the boys out of that. Sometimes the boys like to act out the story while I read it. For Christmas, our whole family acted out the Christmas story on Christmas Eve. Daddy dressed up as Joseph, me Mary, our 7 month old was baby Jesus (with a binky) and the two older boys were wise men. We made good memories and the boys learned more than they would have just from reading I think.

I believe that the more senses you have your kids use when teaching them, the more they'll remember it. Even if you just simply read out of the Bible, try using different voices for the different characters or see if they can answer questions at the end - like a game.

I also personally think you might want to focus on Bible stories first, rather than just memory verses. There are many people who can throw out scriptures for different topics like fear, or money, etc... but less people can go to the Bible and look up a story where God worked in a specific situation similar to their own. Does that make sense? I think it's so valuable to learn about God by teaching children how he worked in peoples lives through history. That's what Bible stories do. They give the verses a context, a setting, a story so the verses actually make sense.

Sorry for the long post - just a few ideas from someone who has worked with not only my own children as I try to instill values, but also with many children in Sunday schools through the years.

Hi Claudia, you haven't posted in a few weeks so, I don't know if you are still searching for Christian friends or if God has answered your cry. If you are my name is Tina. I am the mother of 4, 2 girls( 20 & 18) and 2 boys(16-14). I've been married for 20 years. I asked God in my heart at 15 but, I did not start studing his word until my oldest was 2years old. I felt she and my children to come needed what was not consistent in my childhood.

As to teaching my children; I liked to read the Bible then read a children's bible. I believe Gods word is strong, and that he wants us to understand his word and teach it to those who do not know it.

I wish you lived near me--I have 4 kids as well. I would guess my kids are a little older though. We've been married 13.5 years and our kids are 9m to 11y. I don't seem to have any close friends either--at least none that are available to "pal around with." I have fairly conservative values as well which most of my friends don't (even those at church).



BTW, there's a good group of Christian mothers at Christian Sisters Playgroup on iVillage. I'm a member there too (Glenda306).

I am on the far side of 50 :( and have 3 children, 43,41 and 35, grandchildren ranging from 14-2 (10 so far), and been married 37 years, 43 combining 1st and 2nd marriages, live in cold, cold Michigan. We have an obligation to each other, to lift hands when they are weak, hold each other up when our legs won't hold us any longer, and to dry each other's tears when we can't take it any longer. I keep learning and trying. I am a mother of 5 all frown children. I now care for two grandsons 13, 10. Both Diagnosed with ADHD, Bipolor, ODD. It is very challenging and rewardng.. I agree with yo on the Bible reading and discussions. Children are an oen book. The ask many questions and need many right answers. Since the schools are getting involved with the religious part of our children's lives, we need good answers. Where else could we go but to God and His Word. Amen! I have found as far as having devotions for my children the best way is to start reading straight from the Bible we pick a book and just start reading then discuss a verse or 2 depending on where we are reading, I have bought devotion books that were made for their ages and i have found it isnt as rewarding as just reading from the Bible and discussing what Christ is teaching us. The kids seem to get more involved and ask more questions.

It seems you already have some very good advice Claudia. If yu don't know about it or have not read one of "Our Daily Bread" is a very good devotional book. Small with stories and scripturers. It is free and you can go online to receive it at your home and find more Bible study advice. God to . You can donate to them that is how they keep up the good work they do. Another place to go is They will end you a Discovery Series Catalog to reveive at home. These can get you a start. You get a new one each month. I love to read them to my grandsons. I always start by reading the scriptures to them, then I go back through and cover what that means and why it's important. I also like finding related scriptures so that they can see the whole Bible works together. I normally type out my lessons, but haven't written down a Christmas one yet. We have just been reading the story and discussing it's importance.

I was Church of God at first then I got Baptized in Jesus Name and what a difference. I felt like I had been scrubbed inside and out when I came up after being baptized in the Name of Jesus.

I have to agree with Bettye, it's steadfast in it's aplication. If you're wanting to seek another wording to maybe bring something out clearer that isn't quite as well understood, then sometimes I will look at another version, but when I'm studying the word or memorizing, I stick with the King James version.

The best Bible is the King James Version. I've been reading and memorizing it for about 68 years and the Word says not to change it. I fear for those who have changed it. Read it and tell the good stories out of the Bible and Pray with your children. More later.

 I'm 38 years young and a Grandmother. My own daughter showed me this " the  Circle of Moms". It was so nice to see someone else who has raised their children already.
