I'm looking for a good Christian based book on discipline. My daughter is 15 months and just beginning to learn that she can say no and just because I say no, doesn't mean she has to listen. :-) I want to be able to discipline her in a productive way for the both of us. Does anyone have any good suggestions??

Thanks!!

Shepherding a child's heart by Tedd Tripp. I honestly haven't read it all but what I have has been good. I am not a big reader, but I am trying to get it finished. A christian woman whom I highly respect told me about Shepherding a Child's Heart.

I would tend to agree with the others regarding Dobson's books, and the Henry Cloud/Townsend books. I would also add in "Creative Correction" by Lisa Whelchel (she was Blair on the Facts of Life show back in the 80s and she is a wonderful Christian lady who is an inspiration and encouragement to Christian mothers). I'd also suggest books by Dr. Randy Carlson, and Kendra Smiley to mention just a few : ) May God richly bless you in your efforts as a mother. In HIS palm, Gina

Here's another one that has completely changed the way we thinking about discipline - it's about getting at those hearts of our children: Shepherding a Child's Heart, Tedd Tripp.

Wow I found this conversation helpful. I've read "Dare to Discipline" ... soo glad I read that even when my first was a baby, just so I wasn't trying parent my toddler without any purpose. But my husband and I have to constantly re-evaluate what we're doing 'cause my sweet toddler keeps growing and changing! What worked before doesn't always continue to work. Also, we've noticed that sometimes we have to stop and evaluate what her motive might be ... is she being outright defiant, or just a two-year old exploring her world, or is it just on my nerves and not really a misbehavior? That's so hard to discern sometimes! I can't wait to read some of these suggestions as we continue on our road raising our daighters.

Boundaries for Kids by Henry Cloud and John Townsend. We did a study on it in Sunday school.

There are so many out there with different parenting philosophies, I have 3 favorite Christian authors who are all family psychologists. Dr. Dobson has a few that were really helpful to me, if you are ok with spanking: "Dare to Discipline" and "Dr. Dobson on Parenting".

Dr. Greg Popcak advocates attachment parenting, absolutely no spanking, in "Parenting with Grace"; really sweet, but hard to do with many kids.

Dr. Ray Guarendi's "You're a Better Parent Than You Think" and "Discipline That Lasts A Lifetime" are somewhere between with his common sense approach to parenting.

In the end, what succeeds is what you feel most comfortable with. I was raised with spanking, but could never embrace it fully with my own children, except in toddler years when it sometimes seems like all they understand. Hope these suggestions are helpful.
