Our family has been homeschooling since 95 it has been one of the most rewarding challenging experiences of my life learning and sometimes re learning with our kids has been an awesome experience.Support groups are great for outside activities and field trips etc.Never think homeschooling is something you just cant do...

Join homeschool groups. The ones in Austin,Tx area have prom and sports also. They even have professors from UT help out. It's all the advantages of private school for a smaller price.Oh,we all know it's better than public school.

Thank you for asking this question. I have 5 daughters. One of them has been begging me to homeschool her literally since Kdg. Another is having trouble with the public school due to a sleeping problem she is having and although I am working with the doctor to get her straightened out, she has been late for school due to this and she is on the verge of an in school suspension due to tardies she has no control over. She is literally laying awake in bed with no lights on and with no tv on and with no other distractions either. Then she isn't able to wake up to be at school by 8:05. Don't know what else to do with her.
Thanks again for all the good information.

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention previously, when I was homeschooling, Barnes & Noble gave homeschooling parents a 10% discount on books. I don't know if it's still in effect, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Change, change, change. Start and then redo...that is the beauty of homeschooling. Pick a curriculium, go to a homeschool store, join a local group, but know that you will grow and change as you begin to see things from a different light. My most useful site, internet4classrooms.com. This site has the required standards by grade level. More importantly I think, it give tons of worksheets and links to games and online activities so your kids can practice while they are playing a game!! I love it. I often go here to solidfy what we are learning. Have fun!

also check in to time4learning.com and Connections Academy. Connections Academy is a virtual public school, and they provide the books, etc, They are both easier approaches to homeschooling for beginners. We used Abeka in Hawaii but we had to switch to our own curriculum due to the cost, but Abeka is a great Christian source for homeschooling. Heritage academy is another great source.

I am not a homeschooler myself but I support those who do, if it's done correctly. Props for doing your research! I believe that along with homeschooling parents should also be sure to socialize their child. Children need to know how the "real world" works, the good and the bad. I know too many homeschooled children that would be eaten alive in a college or work place setting. Good for you for taking on the challenge. Good luck!

I too am considering homeschooling my 9 year old. She has been in private school since pre-k and isn't getting the one on one that she needs. I know many families that are homeschooling and I recommend checking your state about legalities, but who can understand or be a nurturing teacher like mom? Good luck and the best of wishes...

join www.theSwap.com

It is the longest running on-line homeschooling support group. They were founded in the early 1990s.

I've been part of the group since 1995. -- I've been homeschooling since 1993.

I would recommend going to www.hslda.org. The Home School Legal Defense Association has a lot of information, especially on how to do it legally in your state. I am not a homeschooling mom (yet); my son is only 2 1/2 months old. But I home schooled for seven years growing up and I would recommend it for anyone. The biggest thing in my experience is to make sure your child is interested in home schooling as well. I've seen many cases where the child thinks he or she is missing out on all the cool stuff by home schooling. As a result, they go wild once they gain independence and get into drugs and that sort of thing.

I just started homeschooling last year. My son is a junior this year. It was quite a new experience for us both but I would not change it. Have you chosed a curricullum to use? Keep in mind that there are many to choose from and yes as someone mentioned there are Christian based and non-Christian based ones. Pray about it and choose carefully. I wish you well.

hey! I have been homeschooling for the last 4 years and I have 4 children. I am loving it and would love to share what I've learned. One of the best resources I have come across is Managers of Their Homes by Teri and Steve Maxwell and Managers of Their Chores by the same authors. These helped me so much in the other areas that it enables us to have more time for school and more relaxed time and scheduled time. All very important. Let me know if you have any specific questions though. I'd be happy to help.
