Is it wrong?

My husband and I have been living together for about 10 months and was wondering if it's wrong to miss church one day, our first Valentine's Day. I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter that lives with us and very seldom does her daddy get her. My husband and I has had ONE day completely alone and would like to stay home tomorrow to spend a little more time together before my daughter comes home and my father-in-law thinks we're putting God last. Please help.

I know this is an old post - but here's my opinion .....

You say "my father-in-law thinks we're putting God last" - well sorry but what business is it of your father-in-law's whether you go to Church or not? What business is it of his whether you even BELIEVE? None whatsoever! Parents need to learn to butt out of their offspring's marriages!

And I can't believe that you go to a Church which only has ONE service on a Sunday! Most have at least TWO. You could go to the morning one, or you could go to the evening one. Or you don't have to go at all. It is YOUR CHOICE.

Don't feel bad about missing a Church service in order to spend quality time with your spouse, cherishing one another and investing in your own marriage.

Just awesome, thanks for the LMFAO Penny

When two or more are gathered in his name he is there. That includes you and your husband. Even if you spend it making love. Now I'm not saying miss it every Sunday. A family starts with God then the couple, and when your together your honoring God.

I sure hope you went! It's important to go to church and be there to fellowship, but your marriage is the most important earthly relationship you have! It's also important to nourish it! Missing one day of church for your marriage is JUST FINE. :)

God is everywhere- not just in the church building- my husband and I are christians and have been married 30 years with 3 grown children. As long as you take time to pray - it doesn't matter if it's at church, home, in the car or in the woods! Just remember the Greatest Spirit in the world every day of your life and enjoy- the church is just a building- it is the people inside that make it real loving environment and place of worship. Go with your heart- I believe God would want you to have that precious time together- he would understand- don't let your father-in -law get to you.

I believe that putting God first or last is what you do on a daily basis, not just attending church on Sunday. Putting God first with your money, your time, your marriage. Putting God first is a heart condition. We shouldn't be judging others. I am sorry you felt so bad about a single church service. Where the spirit of the Lord is there is freedom. Not Bondage!

Good answer Cheryl!

On this side of the cross we are encouraged to not "forsake gathering together". I don't think you're forsaking that.

If you have a relationship with Jesus, you are IN Jesus Christ and God is pleased with you. Keep nurturing that relationship with Him too... and that doesn't require never missing church!

I do not believe it is wrong to occasionally "forsake the gathering of the bretheren". God wants us to nuture our marriages,To many divorces even within the circle of Christian homes and God HATES divorce except in instances of abuse or adultery, hardening of hearts. But, if you can not miss church why not make it part of your celebration and dedicate ST. Valentines day to the Lord and worship together, have a special brunch and alone time afterwards. Married 33 years GOD HOME FAMILY! AMEN!

If you go to church out of FEAR then going to church is "sin". Because "whatever is NOT of faith is "sin!" Church is for you :D
"The sabbath was made for man - man was NOT made for the Sabbath" :D
The greatest worship that you can give God is to live YOUR life FREE & to its fullest!

Missing church every now and then isn't a sin. If you start making a habit of it, you're heading for trouble. I can't quote the scripture, but the Bible says not to FORSAKE gathering with other believers. One absence is NOT forsaking.

I know this post is after the fact, but just remember that Jesus didn't attend church every Sunday. For starters, the Sabbath back then would have been Saturday. You also have to consider the lack of transportation would have made it impossible to make it to the temple every Sabbath. Honoring the Sabbath is not the same as going to church every Sunday.

In todays world, some people seem to put the church above God. Sounds strange, but think about it. Walking into a church doesn't make you a Christian.

I was probably the closest with God the summer I worked at a Lutheran camp and only made it to a real church once the entire summer.

Now on the flip side, commit to not making a habit of it. Its very easy to miss church this Sunday for this and that Sunday for that and pretty soon you've missed a whole month or more.

Do you want the answer you're looking for or the truth? Yes, you are putting God last. Hear me out though. I am not saying you're a bad person. We had a dilema ourselves recently. Traditionally, we have always gone to a friend's house for the superbowl. This year, not only was it on Sunday as usual, but we were having evening communion. Our church does communion quarterly. If we had missed, we would not have had the Lord's supper for another 2-3 months. So, with much PRAYER, God gave us the answer. We went to church. The thing is, you don't need my advice or anyone elses. What is the Holy spirit telling you? Are you saved? Have you asked Jesus to come into your heart and forgive you of your sins? If so, then the Holy spirit dwells in you. He is that inner voice that put the doubt in your head and Satan was giving you the excuses that it was alright and that you needed someone else to validate your choice.
I totally agree that you need family time and couple time. Since your father in law was against it, then I would respectfully approach him that you have a delima. You and your husband need occational couple's nights out and maybe he would be willing to watch your child for the evening...or, look at your church as ask your pastor if he has someone to suggest as a babysitter. That way, you'll never be tempted to make this decision again.
I hope I was not harsh. I know how you feel. I have been down that road and made the same wrong choices, but the closer I get to the Lord Jesus, the harder it is to say no, I have no time for you. And remember, you will ALWAYS be blessed if you go to church....even on the mornings you just can't hardly get out of bed because the blanket is too cozy.
Good luck and draw nearer to Jesus. Read your bilble daily and He will give you the answers. Also, remember as we tithe 10% of our income, we are also asked to tithe 10% of our time . Something I am really working hard on doing.
God bless,

You have a duty to yourself and your husband too. God understands and I doubt that your father-in-law has never, never missed a day of church in his life. Relax and enjoy your day together. God loves you always.

GOD is in your HEART, not in the building you go to for WORSHIP! In Matthew chapter 6 it tells you that you may PRAY to your FATHER in heaven while in a closet, I am sure the home will suffice. :)

i think your father-in-law is overreacting. God knows where your heart is, and if this is the only Sunday missed then i do not think God will mind, because church in the bible does not mean a building, God tells us that when 2 or more gather in my name "I AM THERE" So dont worry about it. Your pretty safe i think.

Church is the best place to be when you can but it is what you 'take home' with you that really matters. I know many who are mostly 'Sunday' christians, the rest of the week you can't tell them apart from the world. God knows your heart. Spend some quality time with your husband Sunday and quality time with God all week. Blessings!

Maybe Daddy forgets what it's like to be young ;) Missing church one time isn't going to send you to hell! Spend time together today, maybe you can catch Wed. nite service, or have a little church service, just you and your husband, during the week. Going to church isn't going to God, God is with us all the time.

Personally, I don't think it's that big of a deal. I think that the idea that you *have* to attend church EVERY SINGLE WEEK, regardless of what's going on in life, is incredibly legalistic. Absolutely, church should be a priority. But worship isn't just something that we do in a certain building on Sunday mornings. Our lives in and of themselves are supposed to be worship. I don't think that by missing one Sunday you're putting God last. Maybe you and your husband could have a special devotional time or prayer time together tomorrow. The fact that you want to stay home to spend time together and keep your marriage strong is a good thing--it's not like you're skipping church to booze it up or something. Your father-in-law needs to relax and focus on his own relationship with the Lord.
