My 8 year old granddaughter calls me Nana. We figured that when my mom was alive and my girls called her Grandma, that would confuse the new child. So I went with Nana. We are now "teaching" Nana to my 8 month old grandson. He will say it when he is cranky and tired and ready for a nap sometimes...LOL.
Good luck with your new grandbaby!!! It is so AMAZING!!! You will love it!!

Personally, I like being called 'Grandma'. {Maybe, because that is what I called my 'Grandma'!} But, what I love are the variations that my grandchildren come up with the word Grandma! So far, they have all settled on calling me, "Grandma'.......except for my 4 year old autistic grandson. Just last year, he was able to start calling me, 'Ma'- he cannot say the word, 'Grand'- just yet. He can say, 'Mom" for his mother now. I love to him hear call for me!

I have one granddaughter that we play a game with our names.......she says, "Grandma Donna Bell" and then I say, "Georgia Donna Bell!"

So I say, don't worry- have fun!

If you want some totally away from Grandma or Grandmother you could go with Honey, Babe, Lovey.

I like Mumsie, or Mom Moo too.

I think the baby should decide...you may eventually be called grandma anyway but when my youngest grandson was first learning to talk he called me Lala because every time I talked to him I said "lalalala" and then clicked my tongue so he would do it too. But alas, he is now three years old and he calls me grandma just like all the others. But the cute little voice that says it breaks my heart every time. I love it.

Christine is right, once they begin to talk they will name you. My youngest calls me grandma but calls his grandpa "papa". If we say go see grandpa he will respond with No he is grandpa, he is papa. so don't worry, let will let you know.

We are waiting on our 6th grandchild. My daughter was due June 17, 2012. We have from our son 4 boys ranging from 14, 12, 7, & 5. And our daughter has a little girl 3 yrs old and her second child on the way, which is a boy. Our oldest grandchild could not say Grandma or Grandpa when he tried it came out PopPop & Mema. So that just stuck and that is what they all call us. I have gotten used to it and love to hear them call my name. I thought my children were blessing but grandchildren are the best. They always love you no matter what!! I hope you found a name that you enjoy. You are blessed when you have grandchildren I believe.

My mom didn't want to be called any of the regular names for grandma. On a trip to Hawaii she was told that grandma in Hawaian was Tutu (too - too). All of the grandkids and great grand kids and their friends call her Tutu!!! I am Grammy to my lil guys!!!

I don't really know why but I'm a 'NANNA'. My first grandchild arrived when I was nearly 50 and I felt too young [within myself] to be a 'Granny'. I have a very dear friend who was Nanna to her Grandchildren and when she became a Great Grandmother the family adopted the name 'GG' for her. That is my plan so I always have a young grandma name. She has passed away now but was NEVER an OLD LADY, till the last 18 months or so. We all loved GG. If, by the grace of God I live to see another generation I want to be a 'GG' to. I also have a friend who's grandkids call her by her christian name because with all the family, step family and extended family there were so many 'Grandmothers' she, my friend, felt confused so Jenny suited her down to the earth. It is your choice,

Our first grandson came up with Mamar and Dadad and then I became Mamarpippie to distinguish between me and his other Grandma. ( Our dog is called PIppa ) However now he is older I am mainly Grandma. Wondering what my other grandson will call me when he starts speaking. Whatever name I am called I just love being a Grandma.

In our family, it goes like this. Grandparents who already have grandkids hold their names for all future births. Review all the taken names & then choose a new one that gives you your own identy. I am known as Mommom, as was my mother to my kids. When my son had kids, they took to calling my mother Mommommom. LOL (Mommom's mom) When I approached my daughter-in-law's mother about this before the arrival of my first grandchild, she said that her 6 other grandkids all called her Grandmaw. I said fine, you be Grandmaw & I will be Mommom. She agreed until the baby learned to say Mommom. Then she declared herself Mommom. By the time the second one was talking, they were both thoroughly confused. Finally she became Mommom Linda & I became Mommom Betty. Now that they are big, I am still Mommom & she is Grandmaw. I relate this to let you know that as carefully as you may plan, it doesn't always work.
Whether you decide to be Grandmother, Grandmom, Grandmaw, Mommom, Mawmaw, Meemee, Meemaw, Granny, Grammy, or any other name that others may suggest, the most important thing is that hopefully the child will identify you by that name & you will be able to create memories that they will never forget.

I disagree with saying if you aren't called Grandma or Grandmother then you need to just "deal with it" - getting older. I love being a Grandmother and have no problem with aging. BUT - since my mother-n-law (since died) was called Nana I have very special feelings to hear my 10 grandchildren call me Nana. Age has nothing to do with the alternative name for grandma that I have.

My 1st grandson, Gavin was born in '08 ... I liked Nana, but my step-MIL is called that ... my MIL is Grammy ... my Mom is Grammy B ... so I went with "GG" (we spell it GiGi) ... which could stand for "Greatest Grandma" ... or "Gavin"s Grandma" ... or heck, could even be "Goofy Grandma" ... I LOVE hearing him call me!!

My hubby wants to be called Grandpa, and Gavin originally started calling him that, but Gavin's Grandpa on his Mom's side is Papa ... and my hubby's Dad goes by Papa ... so Gavin has been calling my hubby Papa. :/

Love hearing your alternative names for Grandma!!
