Hi am am new at being a grandma as well. My son started dating a woman that was 5 months pregnant (not his child) but it looked serious and the mother considered us grandparents. I would not allow anyone to give me a grandparent type name because she had grandparents but if it were my grandchild I would liked the name Nana because that was what my grandmother was called. When the little girl was about a year old she called me Nana on her own and it's been Nana ever since. My grandson was born 2 months ago and now I am Nana to 2 little ones.

Hi Stephanie, congratulations on the coming first grandchild. Some of my grandchildren call me Grandma, and others Gamma, whatever is their own personal thing. My mother and Mother in Law were both Nana, and when my MIL became a great grandmother, the children called her Nana-Great. Sadly, my mother never lived that long. My darling hubby was Granddad. (Of course, he still is). I have heard of G-Ma, don't really like rthat one. My own great grandma was Granny to us all, and my Great grandfather was simply Pa.

They pretty much pick a name for you. Everyone always called me Grandma then when my grandson starting talking I 'm became MawMaw. I have another grandson 9 months so we'll have to wait and see what he will say. I have a coworker who's mom wanted to be called grandma and ended up with GIgi. You never know!

Hi Stephanie,

Congrats on your new grandbaby coming in October!! I have 14 grandchildren and they all call me Grandmom or the older ones call me Gmom. There is Mom-mom, Mimi, or Memom. I am sure there are plenty other names!

Hi Stephanie; I'm a first time Grandmother as well. My granddaughter picked her own name for me;MeMaw. My son was trying to get her to say Grandma and she just said MeMaw. It has stuck. She calls my husband PeePa. You don't necsisarialy have a choice. It's pretty much how they hear it and how they are able to pronounce the words. What ever they call you, you will love it.

I was like you, I was trying to find the right fit. However, when my grandkids came--Trenton now 5 and Kaytlin now 5--what I wanted sort of went by the wayside. They call me what they like. Kaytlin calls me Grammy which I originally thought was "old" sounding--but now I love. Trenton calls me Grandma or Grammy depending on the mood he is in. Neither of these were on my list of what I want to be called. But I guess the old addage "Just don't call me late for supper," comes in to play...lol.

Whatever you or they come up with it will fill your heart with love. God Bless.

I guess it's the "texting" generation that likes this.My grandson can't say "grandma" yet so it does sound like "ga mom" when he calls me. Love it!

I have four that call me gramma, and four that call me granny, I love "gramma". But I know some grandmothers that don't want to be called grand nothing they think their to young, so they come up with all kinds of name. I love being a gramma I feel a since of accomplishment.

What did you call your grandma? Did you llike the name? Sometimes the kids come up with their own names and those are the best.

My daughter is thinking she wants her newborn to call me "g ma" . Not sure if I like it or not but it would be easy to pronounce and distinguish me from the other gma!

My grandkids all call me Grandma and my dh Papa. I like Grandma, sometimes they will call me Grammy, they like to tease me sometimes with Nana because I don't really care for it since most babies call banana's, nana's. LOL My Mom is GG, my dh's mom is Abuelita, which is spanish for grandma. CONGRATS! No matter what they choose you'll love it. :)

My English relatives use, Nan or Nanna. Nanna is usually the great grand mother. I am Grandma Cindy. My English step grandchildren also call me Grandma Cindy. My only grand child had so many grandparents, thats how she figured it out. It will work out, have fun.

I was a first time "Grammy" 14 yrs ago, then number 2 grandson came along and had ideas of his own. I became "Nana" as soon as he could talk. My husband, who was "PawPaw" suddenly became "PaPa". We actually like his choices better than ours, somehow they were more special because he chose them for us. So beware, no matter what you choose, it might become whatever your little one can say. In the end their little words are just so special, you wouldn't have it any other way. Good Luck

I have two names that I go by: To the grandkids I'm Grams and for the GREAT Granbabies I'm known as GGM. Good Luck in your search and make sure you like the name you select.

I don't really know why but I'm a 'NANNA'. My first grandchild arrived when I was nearly 50 and I felt too young [within myself] to be a 'Granny'. I have a very dear friend who was Nanna to her Grandchildren and when she became a Great Grandmother the family adopted the name 'GG' for her. That is my plan so I always have a young grandma name. She has passed away now but was NEVER an OLD LADY, till the last 18 months or so. We all loved GG. If, by the grace of God I live to see another generation I want to be a 'GG' to. I also have a friend who's grandkids call her by her christian name because with all the family, step family and extended family there were so many 'Grandmothers' she, my friend, felt confused so Jenny suited her down to the earth. It is your choice,

I disagree with saying if you aren't called Grandma or Grandmother then you need to just "deal with it" - getting older. I love being a Grandmother and have no problem with aging. BUT - since my mother-n-law (since died) was called Nana I have very special feelings to hear my 10 grandchildren call me Nana. Age has nothing to do with the alternative name for grandma that I have.

My 1st grandson, Gavin was born in '08 ... I liked Nana, but my step-MIL is called that ... my MIL is Grammy ... my Mom is Grammy B ... so I went with "GG" (we spell it GiGi) ... which could stand for "Greatest Grandma" ... or "Gavin"s Grandma" ... or heck, could even be "Goofy Grandma" ... I LOVE hearing him call me!!

My hubby wants to be called Grandpa, and Gavin originally started calling him that, but Gavin's Grandpa on his Mom's side is Papa ... and my hubby's Dad goes by Papa ... so Gavin has been calling my hubby Papa. :/

Love hearing your alternative names for Grandma!!
