14 month old toddler starting to get rashes!

My one year old has been cloth diapered since we brought him home from the hospital. We used to use prefolds and now, as of the last 4 months, use almost exclusively AI2s (GroVia- it was easier with our new daycare). Almost everything is cotton, with a couple hemp blend inserts thrown in there somewhere and hemp doublers at night.

We have never had a problem with rashes, ever, except over Christmas when we stayed at my parents' house for several days and used disposables. But lately he's gotten a couple bad rashes, the first was about a month and a half ago and was a few spots on his bum that healed up when we switched to disposables for a few days. Right now he has a spot on his bum about the size of a nickel and it was bright red and open. It's been there for over a week, and one of the things our doctor told us to do was switch to disposables (in conjunction with a coupe other things) and that seems to be doing better too.

My concern is, will I have to switch to disposables? I really, really don't want to but I can't have my little boy getting these terrible sores. And why would this only be starting now, when he's always been cloth diapered? I've stripped his diapers with blue Dawn at least once a week for the last few weeks and have added an extra hot rinse to the wash cycle, but I don't know that it's going to be enough. Help!

I have not been using cloth very long, but the company I bought my diapers from gave me an 18 page booklet of info when I bought from them. In that booklet it says that sometimes you need to switch detergents. After a long time using the same detergent, it can all of a sudden start to cause a rash. It's possible that could be a solution to your problem. Best of luck to you.
