Considering Cloth -- Anyone use Gdiapers?

I've been doing research into cloth/reusable diapers, and am trying to go with the most economical option for us. So far, while they seem expensive to start, Gdiapers seem to be getting the best reviews. I think I'm slightly confused on the "flushing" aspect of it, though. If I'm understanding it correctly, you buy the Little Gpants and then either the Grefills or the Gcloth Inserts to go inside to .. erm, collect. And then you could potentially reuse the Little Gpants without having to wash them, just replacing the refill liner or the gcloth liner .. is this correct?

I've also read that using the basic gerber "cloth diapers" as a liner for Gpants works perfectly well. Is this *also* correct?

I've been reading the threads posted in this community and it seems Gpants aren't discussed often . . why is that? Have any of you tried them and didn't like them? Are they too pricey and if so, what is my research missing because I really haven't found anything less pricey?

And my issue with some of the other "regular" cloth diapers, maybe you guys can address .. it seems like those diapers/covers are a 1-use deal, then you have to wash them, whereas Gpants *seem* like you could potentially use the pant over again if your baby hasn't fully soaked through .. which means with those, you wouldn't need as many on hand before having to run a load of laundry, but with "regular" cloth diapers, you'd still have to have 10-12 on hand *per day*?

Total cloth-diaper newbie, here .. sorry for all the questions! Any advice would be majorly appreciated. :)

(Also posting this to the Gdiaper community, which seems less active .. which is why I'm posting it here, too. :))

I went with flips one size diapers. I love them I have 2 gdiapers but I don't like them as much I found the snap insert messy to rinse out. An you have to continue to buy them as your baby grows. With flips you don't have to worry about purchasing them as your baby grows just adjust the snap.

I personally don't love my Gdiapers. The disposable inserts are ridiculous. I mean enormous. I couldn't believe it when I put it in. Stupid and huge on my 16 lb son. I instead use them with prefolds, and it's a bit less bulky. The velcro doesn't seem that great, and I hate fastening it behind him. He's too little to try to rip it off himself, so it's pointless and a pain in the butt to get on him. These are my last resort diapers, and I personally like one size diapers so I don't have to keep buying them as he grows. I love the grovia diapers aka grobaby. I also love pocket diapers. I don't mind having to take it off and wash it- if you're using prefold inserts you're going to have to wash them every couple days anyway due to the smell. I bought all my diapers used so it wasn't super expensive and I won't have to keep buying more sizes. I won't likely buy more when he's outgrown his gdiapers.

I love my gs and have never had the problems a lot of moms say they do. I bought a two pack of pants and then a package of inserts when they were on sale at babies r us. Usually when you buy the pants, you get a coupon on it for $2.50 off the refills. So to try them out I spent $30. We liked them so I bought the everyday six pack on sale for $50 and an extra pack of the waterproof pouch for $20. I made my own cloth inserts from gerber prefolds, old flannel sheets, towels, etc. I diapered from 4 weeks old to 12 months old for around $100. That price can't be beat! True that may little man was big and went right to the medium pant so I got to skip two sizes. At 12 months I moved up to the large size and have spent about $130, because this time I grabbed a couple of the pricey hemp cloth packs for overnights. But was able to sell my 8 smaller sizes for nearly $60.

Gdiaper is a good concept, but I believer there are much better options out there. The negatives are that it velcros in the back and the cover itself is not waterproof...only the plastic "hammock" on the inside is. I would look at Gro via or Flip if you are looking for more of a Hybrid or AI2 diaper like the G. I get my diapers at www.cutiepoopsandbottoms.com and they even offer a diaper trial which is great.

I use Wonder Wraps and the Gerber prefolds, which sounds a lot like what you're looking at. The wraps can be reused as long as they are clean and the insert gets dumped in the pail. Wraps fit from 10 pounds to 35 pound and are very well constructed. I haven't used flush-able inserts, but know they can be used if I wanted to.

I totally agree with trying them out first. I bought 14 apple cheeks pocket diapers, which I really did love at first. But now I wish I would have invested in a one-size system so I wouldn't have to buy another dozen of the size 2's!! Try a cloth diaper "test drive" from a local cloth diaper shop. Not sure where you are from, but in Ontario there is a great cloth diaper shop that does these kinds of trials. www.peekaboobottoms.com

I use all-in-ones (pocket diapers) and I LOVE them. Adjustable size, so we only had to buy 3 dozen. At 17 bucks a diaper, expensive to start, but they have held up beautifully. And we can use them for the next babies, too. I got mine at www.tinytush.com

I personally hated them. I haven't used them since my son was born, 9 months ago, so they could have changed the design a bit, I haven't followed them, but others basically said it for me so I shouldn't be too far off. I had a hard time getting a prefold in them. You can't put the prefold on "right" with a snappi and it would fall out of the hammock thing, what a pain. I've never used the flushable inserts for any system so I don't know how they work. We had a lot of leaks and a lot of poo everywhere with them becuase the liner is small. They just seemed to piss me off more than they helped me. I hated that the liner thing wasn't the whole size of the pants. I hate aplix, it doesn't last as long as snaps. I hate they are sized instead of one size.

I bought the Grobaby system when my son was 1 month old and love them. I also love that they are organic. They are also one size so he's still wearing the same diapers I bought 8 months ago and will be until he potty trains. The inserts are so much easier to use and I've never had a leak of any kind with them. They are also easier for my DH to use. He's a fan of the "easiest method possible" while still being cloth and GDiapers were not it for him. He ended up yelling at the diaper a lot.

I've been using and making cloth diapers since my 1st niece was born, 7 years ago. I've used everything that there is to try it out. I still love fitteds with a wool cover the BEST out of any choice. I'll go for that over anything else first.

The best advise i can give is NOT to invest too much in one system at first. Buy a box of G-diapers AND a few pre-folds (you can use the prefolds in the g-diaper covers so you can save $ while seeing if you like the prefols), AND a few all-in-ones. That way you can see what works for your family without spending a lot. I wasted lots of $$ on stocking up on things that I ended up hating. And even if you don't love one of the systems you purchase, you always have them as backup.

The main thing is to stay commited and give it some time, at least a few weeks! Cloth is the best, but not always easy in the first few days when you are learning.

I personally didn't like AIO's beacuse I hated having to wash everything each use, and I didn't like G-diapers because the insert was too small to catch everything each time. I am a big fan of prefolds because you can use your covers multiple times throughout the day. And they do fit in the g-diaper covers.
Don't let it all overwelm you, just try a few things until you find one that works. Good luck!

It depends on how you plan to use them. Are you going to use the cloth or the disposable or both? G diapers is a love them or hate them diaper! I have many moms who do not like the fact they velcro in the back. I have many moms who do not like pulling out the pad or cloth from the waterproof Hammock as it can get very messy. It is really a personal preference. I would really recommend getting a few different diapers at first and try them out. You never know what will work best for your baby and what you will like. We do a diaper trial, and it is amazing how many people change their minds on what diaper they like the best after trying everything!

I would also consider Gro Baby, that is a very very top rated diaper and the inserts are much easier to insert over the G diaper. Also the gerber cloth inserts are not NEARLY as absorbent as the premium chinese prefolds.

I love G diapers and have used them on my 2 1/2 year old since she was 6 months. She is potty trained now so doesn't use them anymore. They were my favorite for traveling and out and about. I used the flushable inserts and cloth in them as well. You can get away with using the cover multiple times before washing and the snap in insert several times unless it gets poop on it. Then you just wash it off in the sink and let it dry and replace it. Many people use prefolds in them successfully but I never could. I used microfiber inserts or other types of inserts. The Old style if you can find them have better velcro and last longer with washing them and they run smaller. I never flushed the inserts myself but that's just a personal choice. They just started carrying newborn g's as well and look really cute!!! Yes you wouldn't need as many g's as other cloth diapers. Just if you decide to do cloth in them as many as you need to go without washing. There are some other type of systems similar to G's out there now that work the same you might want to check out too. Flip and Econobum and Hineylineys. Good luck!!!

I have heard good things about the flips two and the growbaby AI2's, I still love my G's but it probably helps that I have so many of them (12 small and 16 medium) so it's no big deal to have to wash the pants more often then a PUL shell, plus my DD can't tolerate PUL for more then a few hours, but the gdiapers seem to breath better because she has no issues with them. Maybe try a couple of each and go from there?

I do NOT like gdiapers. They say that the snap in system is very easy - but it has added a few extra steps in my cloth diapering routine. I am a full time cloth diapering mama who loves pocket diapers or prefolds and covers. I thought the gdiaper would be a good addition to my collection, but they are awful! You can't put the liner in the dryer, so you have to unsnap everything to wash it! SO annoying. I fell for the adorable factor of gdiapers - which is undeniable! They were the first product that got me thinking about cloth diapering. However, they didn't hold up to my expectations! They are not as easy as advertised (or at least there are easier systems on the market!) Gpants aren't talked about often because there ARE better things on the market. Check out the FLIP system! Which are made by the same company as Bum Genius. The reason that these are great is that you can re-use the cover over and over throughout the day. They are also GREAT over night! You can literally cloth diaper your children with ONLY TWO COVERS! I am using them right now and LOVE THEM. Here's why - G-diapers water proof layer is seperate from the rest of the diaper which means you have TWO parts to keep track of. Flip's cover is PUL which is soft material on the outside, and waterproof on the inside. VERY good at protecting against leaks. AND, it's a one-size system. It will grow with your baby. Gdiapers you will have to buy gpants AGAIN and AGAIN as your baby grows! VERY EXPENSIVE.

TRY FLIP :) ♥ www.cottonbabies.com They are AWESOME - plus they fit more trim than gdiapers (which means way less bulky under a cute pair of jeans!)

My two cents....
1. gDiapers were cool to start but the velcro tabs didn't hold up well over time. After about 2 months of washing and line drying (I never put them in the dryer) the tabs didn't hold.

2. the disposable inserts are expensive - more expensive than disposables in fact (roughly 32 cents each versus 10 cents for disposables)

3. the disposable inserts can be a pain to flush. my home was built in the 80s and after about a month of flushing we had to make a call to Mr. Rooter!

4. true the covers are reusable, but if you have a heavy wetter like I did, there were quite a few times that I didn't want to reuse them - even after letting them air out

With all that said - If cost is your concern, I'd recommend a good chinese or indian prefold with PUL cover like Thirsties Duo Wrap. It's the same principle as adding a Gerber prefold to your gDiaper and PUL covers can truly be wiped and aired out in between uses with no lingering odors. And if you're worried about what to do with poop - consider buying disposable diaper liners. They're like really soft paper towels that you line the diaper with to catch poop and when you change baby, simply throw the liner in the toilet, compost or trash. Check out this video for more info

If you are looking at gdiapers then check out GroBaby diapers. I checked out gdiapers and then found GroBaby and I am IN LOVE with them! When my daughter has her BF poo I don't have to take anything out or flush anything I just put it in the diaper pail to be washed. The snapped inserts are genious I think lol! They wash great and before you dry them just unsnap the covers as the covers don't go in the dryer. The covers dry super fast. The inserts are super absorbant so they do take some time to dry so I just dry them on the line first and then pop them in the dryer for like 30 min to get their softness back.

I use the bumkins laundry bags so I never really have to touch the poo! I tell you with my first daughter she had major exploda poos and I was touching poo all the time, I mean it would pool on me-yuck. I touch pretty much no poo at all with these diapers. They don't leak and they are one size.

Anyway, I should probably sell them I love them so much lol! The website is www.thenaturalbabyco.com. The only thing negative I can say about them is I wish they had more feminine colors to choose from for the covers. But that's about it.

They also have a disposable insert you can buy if you are going on a car trip or out all day. They dispose in the trash in about 50 days vs the 500 years for regular diapers and they have 3 grams of the SAP vs however much the others have. Anyone that has questions on the GroBaby's please ask!

We use a combo of g-diapers and homemade fitted cloth with separate covers. I liked the g's but found the disposable inserts too expensive so I made my own cloth inserts. I personally prefer the fitteds to the g's because I seem to have more leaks and occasional "blow-outs" with the g's. The one thing I DO like better about the g's is that it's easier for dads/grammas/babysitters because it goes on like a disposable. If you do use the disposable inserts, I wouldn't recommend flushing or composting them. It can be troublesome and despite the fact that they are better for the environment than regular disposables, they do still contain chemicals.

I've been a gMum since my son hit the 8 lb minimum (the Tiny G's were not out yet when we had him) and I LOVE them. I use the flushies out and about and at night, and the gCloth at home. You are correct- you don't have to change the little gPant every time. Or the snap-in liner unless it's dirty (poop usually does get on it). I've found the gCloth just fine absorbancy wise, but I've never tried anything else. BUT, one of my BFF's had been using regular prefolds (from Green Mountain Diapers) and I got her to switch to gCloth. She says they are much more absorbant than the prefolds.

I had never done cloth before but I have found gDiapers to be easy and very user-friendly. Also, fairly cost-effective.

I Have 7 medium little gPants, and it is way more than enough in the Mediums. I had 6 smalls and it was just enough. I would say get 2x the number of liners for the smalls, but with the Mediums I just have 2 extras floating around. I have 18 gCloth inserts and it lasts me about 2 1/2 or 3 days, which you don't want your diapers sitting around any longer then that or they will get bacteria growth.

PS- gDiapers has a VERY active FaceBook page. You can post any questions there, or e-mai them! I have always received an e-mail respoinse within 48 hours of sending it.

I ♥ gDiapers!

Opps forgot to talk about amounts. You will want about 6 gpants and at least 24 inserts (prefolds, flats, flappers) so you can wash every other day, the pants just go in with the regular laundry when they need to, you don't have to wash them with your diapers and the liners can be machine washed and hung to dry or handwashed, Gheadquarters says handwashing is harder on them then machine washing but I like to just wash them out by hand right away when they get dirty, I'm just really gentle with them.
You need 24 - 30 diapers no matter what style you choose, if you go with an all in one or pocket you will only need the 24 - 30 diapers (and inserts for pockets) if you go with fitteds or prefolds you will need the 24-30 diapers and then about 6 covers.

Gdiaper are my favorites, I never use flushies in them, just cloth.

Most of the time you can just drop out the insert (cloth part) and reload it, this true of any All in 2 system. If the liner get's dirty you just snap it out and snap in a new one, you will want a few extra liners, twice as many as pants for the newborn stage and then just a few extra after that. The gcloths availible from gdiapers are not very absorbant, you are better off with gflappers or a prefold in them, I have used flats in mine, but they are a bit too bulky to fit properly in the smalls, they work great in the mediums and larges. I use mainly prefolds or homemade inserts in mine. Preemie/newborn prefolds fit in the smalls and infant prefolds fit great in the mediums. Don't buy the gerber prefolds they are garbage, they don't work because they have cheap batting in them instead of absorbant cloth.

Fitteds are also an excelent lower cost option, you use a fitted diaper and a waterproof cover over top, you can reuse the cover as long as it is still clean (no poop) just hang it up to dry in between changes, you will want to do the same if you go with the gdiapers, just alternate them between changes.

Remember too if you are planning to use cloth right from the beginning you will need to use either newborn fitteds and covers or newborn/preemie prefolds and covers for the first few weeks until the g's fit or buy the tiny g's they have now, I just use the preemie prefolds with a snappi and cover for the first while and then use the preemie prefolds in the small g's so I get more use out of them.
