considering quitting

My daughter is nine and a half months old now, and we've been cding since she was 1 month. She went through a bad rash issue with cd's but we started putting fleece liners in, and using disposables at night and that helped A LOT. Now, the rash is back again, and isn't clearing up on it's own. I'm considering going back to disposables for a week or so until it clears up, but I wonder if it's worth it to cloth diaper if this is going to be a recurring issue. Also, now that I'm having to rinse poopy diapers in the toilet it's a lot more yucky, and more work. And the diaper pail constantly smells of ammonia and I can't make it quit! With all this I'm about at the end of my rope. If anyone has solutions or encouragement please help!

Hi the rash thing happened with my daughter too and I use a pea sized squirt of (womanly yeast cream) Monostate 7 on the rash it self (not in the vagina).

And as regular maitanance you should be striping your diapers.

I use a large canning pot and boil my clean diapers for 20-30 minutes on the stove. Then wash in the machine with a squit of Dawn dish soap. (about a 1/2 teaspoon)

But here is a link to a site with other ways and a list of reasons for needing to strip the diapers!

I hope that helps!

I had the same issue for a while. I did two things.
I started to "strip" the diapers. that is basically boil them or wash them in hot water (with no soap) do it a few times, until the bubbles go away. This will basically reset the diapers i did it once a month or so...whenever they needed it. AND i switched to Rockin Green detergent I use the Hard Rock (for hard water) this helps eliminate the build up in the diapers!

I know this is an old thread, but I'm going to post this just in case any one else has this issue. . . you need to strip you diapers. the rash/infection has probably gotten into the diapers and that is why it keep coming back (this happened to my son with impentigo, can do the same with yeast infections etc.) if you strip them it will get rid of the stink and kill whatever is causing the rash. . . I wrote about my experience with it here, and there is a link to instructions on how to strip them at the end written by the people who make the cloth diapers I use. hope this helps some one!

Try a gdiaper. Its either disposable or cloth. You can do both in one, or just disposable with the neato diaper cover and from what I understand, the disposble inserts are cheaper than disposable diapers and they are earth friendly. You can buy 40 diapers for $14.95, instead of 36 huggies or pampers for $18.99.

"open pailing" has worked wonders for my best friend and myself for pail odor. We got rid of the Diaper Champ and switched to just an ordinary 4 dollar plastic white waste bin and have a liner in it. No Smell! If they are allowed to "breathe" it helps tremendously. Just be careful to make sure baby doesnt decide to tip it over and play...mmm...no good. lol. Hope this helps.

someone said something about a yeast infection, I would suggest getting her looked at by a dr/ if it isnt going away sometime soon. Also one thing to try doesnt even have to do with the diapers, use less soap in her baths. A friend of mine was told a major cause for yeast infections is having more soap than needed being in their baths.(her daughter was getting rashes/yeast infections weekly & she used disposable dipes) My children where having problems with regular rashes, she told me about that, so I too started using less soap & they got rashes a lot less frequantly!!! Just a suggestions, worth a try :)

GOOD LUCK!!!

my son had a yeast infection/and now has eczema. I thought it was the cloth diapers for the longest time, I tried disposables for a week and it made his skin much worst. Just a thought because we tend to blame it on the cloth diapers (especially when our friends babies don't have these issues and they are in disposables).

you can find TTO at any health food store and even alot of drug stores that have a homeopathic dept. I would suggest buying the bigger bottle because once you start using it most people find uses everywhere for the stuff (10 drops in a spray bottle of water and you never have to buy hard surface disenfectant again) and the big bottle works out to way cheaper.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I already do most of it, but there were some good tips offered that I'll have to try before giving up. Anybody know where to buy tea tree oil? I'm guessing Whole Foods or bath and body works or something?

I also never swish a diaper in the toilet. I second what others have suggested in checking out flushable liners or just using toilet paper.

Also, as others have said, maybe the rash is due to your wash routine. You do NOT need a lot of soap, and do NOT use fabric softener -- these are common causes of rash and common mistakes people make and then wind up giving up on cloth diapering. I would make sure your wash routine is good (after stripping the diapers). There are some suggestions here, but basically, do a cold rinse first, then a hot wash with a tiny amount of soap -- always use the most amount of water possible. I have used a front loader as well, but it worked fine for me. You can put some vinegar in the final rinse to help remove the soap residue (you can use a downy ball, if you would like).

with the rash and the stink at the same time I think it is a build up problem, It happens from time to time espeacially if yo9u have a front loader. Like others said I think it's time to strip your diapers, I just wash the already clean diapers on hot 2 or 3 times with no detergent and that usually works. I have to second the tea tree oil for the rash as well, it gets rid of yeast where as other creams and powders, disposable wipe solution and what not can actually feed yeast and make it worse. if it is yeast stripping the diapers should kill it and adding 1/4 - 1/2 tsp of TTO to the wash will make sure it's gone. I don't mix the TTO with oil though, I just mix it with water 10 drops in 2 oz in a spray bottle and use it on cloth wipes at every change, the rash clears up in a day or 2 but you still need to keep useing the TTO solution for 10 days to make sure all the yeast is gone or it will just come back.
As for the rinsing the diapers I have never in 7 years put a diaper in the toilet, I use the flushable paper liners int he diaper most of the time and if HD forgets or DD poops at a strange time and there's no liner in the dipe I just use toilet paper or a potty wipe to clean of as much as I can quickly and toss it in the pail.
My wash rutine in my basic HE front loader is Cold quick wash extra rinse, hot heavy wash with 1Tbsp liquid tide HE and 1/4tsp of TTO and an extra rinse.
Hot dryer or dry in the sun during the summer and very few issues.

Here is what works for me:
Pre-wash in cold water, soak overnight in cold water with baking soda, wash in hot water with detergent (once every 2 weeks I add Oxyclean), rinse with 1/2 cup white vinegar, then rinse again in cold water. Hang dry whenever possible. Hanging them in the sun will get rid of any remaining stains.

For the rash, I use olive oil and tea tree oil and lavender oil in my cloth wipe warmer anyway, if they get a rash that won't go away I will take the hottest wipe out and let it sit on their bottom until it cools to relieve the irritation, put a thin layer of diaper ointment, and then seal it in with lanolin. Then I put a cotton liner between the baby and the fleece liner so the lanolin won't coat the fleece, and the rash will be gone in 12-24 hours. Whatever you use for the rash, be sure to use the cotton liner bc any oil will leave a residue on the fleece and affect absorbency.

For the pail (I use an old cat food bucket, the diaper genie was a smelly, logistical nightmare) I put it in the tub and fill the bucket with hot water and baking soda and let it soak while the diapers are in the wash. Works every time.

A note on the diaper sprayer: I have one, and it's a mess. Either the pressure isn't enough to get the poop off, or it's so much that it sprays poop all over the bathroom and me. I dump what I can in the toilet and just toss it in with the other diapers, although I do have a #1 pail and a #2 pail. But I kept the sprayer hooked up because it is very handy for rinsing off dirty kids in the tub!

I would have to say that i would try stripping your diapers. That may be the cause of the rash. And give your LO as much naked baby time as possible. It really seems to help.

Pile on the desitin and put her in a pre-fold cloth diaper, not a fleece one because the cream will ruin it. That usually works for me. You could also get a diaper sprayer for the toilet which makes runny poop really easy to spray off! Bio-liners will collect the poop for you to just toss away. For the smell, you need to wash with baking soda (about 2 tablespoons and in your rinse cycle or with a downy ball, put about 1/4 cup of vinegar) works really well! Then you can try Rocking Green detergent. You can get it at http://www.cutiepoopsandbottoms.com, works great!

I didn't see you mention it, so, have you tried stripping them? Often ammonia smell is caused by detergent build-up (and when my diapers get that ammonia stink, my baby gets a rash.) Turn up the temp on your water heater, wash the dipes in super hot water with a squirt of dawn, then rinse them over and over on hot until there are no suds. Then you may need a change in your wash routine. I'm using Rockin' Green now and it seems to be working much better. At first I was using too much and started getting the ammonia stink but I reduced it to 1 Tbsp. and now I have clean diapers and no build-up.

Oh-- and I love my diaper sprayer! (I do keep a pair of rubber gloves by the toilet though-- we only usually have 1 poopy diaper a day so I don't mind it too much!)

All the things the other ladies have suggested are great...The only thing I can think to add is for the diaper pail smell, I stuck one of those Arm & Hammer refrigerator odor eliminators to the inside of the lid and it works great!!! Good luck, and just keep trying!!

We had problems with my son getting yeast infections since I was on antibiotics for a time. Have you taken her to the doctor to make sure it isn't yeast because if it is and you don't treat it properly it either won't go away or will keep flaring up. Also, what worked really well for diaper rash with my son is tea tree oil mixed with olive oil (his rash would be gone in less than 24hours). I would mix 1ml tea tree oil with 100ml olive oil and that would be strong enough to do the trick. Plus tea tree oil helps with bacterial as well as fungal infection if that is part of the problem and this mix won't leave a residue on your diapers.

I've been cding for over a yr now. Here's my 2 cents. I use an herbal salve on my daughter for maintence, but when she gets a rash, I use A&D ointment. I apply it sparingly and haven't had any absorbancy problems- The diapers she wears are fleece lined pocket diapers, so she doesn't come in straight contact with her absorbant materials. She also gets lots of no diaper time, and at every diaper change when I am home, I wipe her bottom off with a warm wet washcloth.
I use Charlie's Soap for wash, or All 2x free & clear. I wash them in hot water and do an extra rinse on them. I hang them outside to dry- liners and covers weather permitting. If not the inserts go in the dryer and the covers on a rack over my heat vent.
For the smell, I rinse my daughters diapers out before I put them in the pail. Doesn't completely eliminate the odor, but it gets most of the pee out. For poo, I took an old plastic kitchen spatula to scrape the diaper with. Baby poo doesn't bother me, but the thought of putting my hands in the toilet, I couldn't do it. Now that she's eating alot more solids, a good shake generally knocks most of it off, but if not, I scrape as much as I can off and then rinse it out throughly (sometimes with a little handsoap) in the sink and wring them all out before I put them in the pail. I also wash every other day, sometimes every 2 days. As soon as I start the wash, I wash out the diaper pail with a drop or 2 of baby soap and weather permitting, put the pail outside in the sun til I need it.

You know what I do, I put olive oil on my son's bottom, and that really helps!

Question.. do you close your diaper pail? I never close mine, and I never have any odors.

Hawk is turning 3 this month and we have issues with our water, but I've found that an extra rinse, or using Rockin' Green detergent has really helped with his diapers. I did a "Rock the Soak" on Hawks' diapers, and it really helped.

Let me know if you have any questions, or you need a sample of Rockin' Green!!

Oh.... and when you say ... rinse the poopy diapers in the toilet.... are you literally dunking them?

If so, have you thought about a diaper sprayer?

Actually, with Hawk, and remember, he's almost 3, I just shake what's loose in the toilet, and throw the rest in the diaper pail. I don't do diapers prayers and I don't do the dunk and swish and make a mess in the process method (not everyone makes a mess, but I do!!).... I leave the rest on there, and make sure I do an extra rinse. That might be something to help you eliminate some of the stress and extra work! Don't give up!!
