Hi! I've been cloth diapering for 16 months now, and I really like Rockin Green Detergent. I used Planet for a long time, but you have to buy 4 huge bottles at a time which is more of an investment than I like. If you live in Grand Junction, you can get it at Colorado Baby (203 Grand Ave), and she has samples of it that you can try.

Most detergents have fillers that will not rinse out throroughly from cloth diapers. I use an ultra concentrated detergent that's very ecofriendly and has been around for 50 years. It's called SA8 and I get it @ www.elmenterprises.mychoices.biz. I wash everything in it and only need about 2 tablespoons per load. Two other products you should try are Tri-zyme presoak and the prewash. Only a very few "pre-set" stains made it past this trio.

I use Rockin Green as well, but I plan on making my own to save money.

A really good natural detergent is BabyGanics. You can get it at Toys R Us or Babies R Us. It's also reasonably priced!

Don't forget...fabric softner will make your diapers less absorbant. IF you have to use it, use it sparingly. We don't use it on our FuzziBunz at all, and they still come out soft, despite our hard water.

Allen's Naturally has worked great for us. That's what was recommended when we purchased them. The 1.5 gallon was around $40, but has like 250-300 loads in it. That's about how much laundry we do in a year. I'm sure I used to spend way more than that per year on detergent. It's biodegradable too!

Hi. Depends on the kind of nappy you are using. If it has lycra or elastane in it, you should avoid biological detergents as the enzymes will ruin the lycra. However, if your nappies are of the pure cotton variety, most detergents will be fine depending on water hardness and also your baby's skin. My kids were fine with bio stuff but my friends kids always got nappy rash if she used it. Trail and error I guess. Good luck. x

I was just about to start a similar thread! I've been CDing for a year now. In the beginning I had always read that you have to be careful when picking "natural" and "green" brands because most of them contain enzymes which will shorten the life of diapers. So... I've always used All or Purex free and clear varieties. Does anyone know if theres truth behind this? I would really like to try some of the more eco-friendly detergents I've been seeing.

here's a good list to start with. it breaks them out by HE vs. top loader compatible. my personal fave is Country Save. You can find it online at Alice.com and get it with free shipping. Below are links to sites with some detergent samples you can try before you buy a whole box.
one thing to think about is if you have hard water or not. hard water will cause more buildup on your diapers than usual and you'll want a detergent with ingredients that can help with that. places with hard water in the US are Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, Arizona and southern California. the links listed under 'OTHER SAMPLES' below have hard water versions of their detergent you should try. i prefer lulu's in the fluff over rockin' green.
