My son started having mild diaper rash when I use cloth. I've been using them for about 4 months and everything's been great until recently. I put him in disposables while he has a rash and use creams, then once it's gone I put him back into cloth and after a day or so the rash is back. Why? I wash them 1 cold cycle w/o detergent, 1 hot/warm cycle w/soap nuts and baking soda, 1 hot/warm w/o detergent then an extra rinse. I've stripped them and still problems. I usually change him every 2 hours or so. When I do use cloth I put coconut oil on him and still rash. What am I doing wrong? It doesn't look like yeast. It clears up in a day or so w/sposies and cream. I make sure he's dry before putting on a new diaper. I don't want to give up w/cloth but am so frustrated!

Oh and I use the solution both ways. I have some in a bottle that has lasted a couple months at least and is still not empty for most at home diaper clean ups, and then I also put some in a ziplock bag or plastic diaper container and soak the wipes in it for when we are out or really bad/dirty diapers.

Sorry it took me so long to write back. *smile* I just pour some in there, I would say a cup for a full load? I can't remember what the Charlies Soap people said to use, but I just pour it in a circle around the wash and it works for our diapers. I do LOVE our cloth wipe solution. When you try it you will fall in love with it too. *smile*

I hadn't thought about bacteria. How much hydrogen peroxide do you put in? Since I stopped putting baking soda in the rashes have pretty much stopped but I'm sure there's bacteria. I do use cloth wipes, but not exclusively, and usually I just wet them down. That formula for cloth wipes is awesome and I am so excited to try it! How do you use it? Do you put it in a spray bottle? Do you use a wipe warmer?

A couple things come to mind. Do you have a sanatizer wash on your washer? If not, you could be having a bacteria build up in your washer. Even if you are washing with hot water. That can breed bacteria. Without using something to kill that bacteria it just grows, even in your washer. I personally put hydrogen peroxide in every hot wash (I only do one per load) to kill that bacteria. I had stopped for a while because I forgot to buy some and didn't think about it and my daughter started doing the same thing. My friend was curious and called her soap provider Charlie's Soap to see what they problem was because she had the same issue I was having and they told her that about the washers. We both started putting the hydrogen peroxide back in our hot wash and the rash went away. Also, if you put your diapers out to Sun then the Sun Rays will kill the topical bacteria and is a natural bleach. Also, have you tried changing your wipes to cloth wipes? After I changed to cloth wipes we have had no more rashes period. I think it is partly the chemicals in the disposable wipes, even the hypoallergenic with no alcohol, and partly due to the solution we use. I am in love with the wipe solution we use. I use it for several things. It is 2 cups of water, 1/8 cup Olive Oil, 5 drops of Tea Tree Oil and 5 Drops of Lavender Oil. You can do 5-10 drops of either oil from whichever you have avaiable. The Tea Tree Oil and Lavender fight fungal and bacteria infections. Also the solution used with another cloth is good for clearing up runny noses and drainage because of the health properties of the Oils. Hope this helps and you get it all figured out soon!

what kind of wipes do you use? this was happening with my son when we first started cloth diapering and I was using disposeable wipes. I realized that the wipes were so wet I was putting his diaper on him when his bum was still wet and so it was irritating his skin because it was constantly wet in there.

I switched to cloth wipes (which is much easier anyway!) and use a spray called "thirsties booty luster" you can buy it pretty cheap on amazon. When I wipe him I spray his bum with it, and then wipe him with a dry cloth wipe (you could even use cut up burp cloths if you are desperate). The spray also helps treat/prevent diaper rash so since using it I have not had to switch back to disposeables for rashes (except when he got impentigo, but that is different than a diaper rash!). Sometimes he wakes up int he morning with a mild rash, but I just spray him a little extra with the booty luster and by the next time I change him he is clear!

hope that helps!!!
here is a link to the spray I use so you can see it

Have you tried using Bepanthen or Sudocrem? I found sometimes I had to swap the creams around (what worked one month wouldn't the next). Fresh aloe vera is also great (I used some lotion on first coz I wasn't sure if it would be too strong going directly on his skin). Also maybe just double check with a naturopath or homeopath to make sure it's not a yeast infection? My baby had one for a few months, it was nasty:(
