I wouldn't use regular detergent if you are hand-washing, but maybe you could do a vinegar wash in the tub (after cleaning it, of course)? Also, here's the homemade laundry soap I use. I don't think any of the ingredients are considered toxic, so it could probably be used for handwashing:

Laundry Soap

1 bar Castile Soap, grated
1 cup Washing Soda
1/2 cup Borax

Boil water in a medium saucepan.
Run exhaust fan to disperse any fumes.
Reduce heat to a simmer and add grated soap.
Stir continually until the soap dissolves completely.
Place soda and borax in a 5-gallon bucket.
Pour in the melted soap mixture, and stir until powder is dissolved.
Fill the bucket to the top with more hot tap water.
Stir, cover securely, and let set at least 8 hours. Stir again.
Pour some of the laundry liquid in a clean laundry soap bottle.
Store the remainder in the sealed bucket.
The soap will NOT suds up in the washer, but it works!

BUCKET:
Small Loads 1/2 Cup or 1 Ladle
Medium Loads 3/4 Cup or 1 + 1/2 Ladle
Large Loads 1 Cup or 2 Ladles

BOTTLE:
Small Loads 1/2 Cap
Medium Loads 1 Cap
Large Loads 1 + 1/2 Cap
DRIP DRYING:
Half-fill fabric softener ball with white vinegar and put in wash
