Alright ladies, I desperately need help! I use AMP AI2 diapers with the hemp liners. The other day I realized that I had forgotten about a bunch of them and they had been SOAKED and sitting in my dry diaper pail for about two weeks. They smelled horrible and some of them had turned brown. I washed and dried them once like I normally do but most of them still smelled bad. What do I do now??? Should I rewash them until they are good again, or should I strip them? Any help would be much appreciated! The thought of ruining a bunch of my clothies makes me want to cry...

For the most part they are back to normal but some of them still smell a little off. I didn't have any peroxide so I used a little bit of vinegar.I also hung them in the sun to dry, but there are so few sunlit hours these days that I don't think that did much. I think I'm going to try this washing routine one more time tomorrow to see what happens. Thank you SO much for your help, I didn't even know where to start!

I use standard, low grade 3% peroxide from the local store (Target actually). Its not corrosive at all. Most stores sell the low grade kind. You're right though, higher grades of peroxide are corrosive and for that reason I wouldn't recommend using higher grades in general - much less for laundry.

what you are using is not true peroxide then babe, poroxide is highly corrosive...I use vinegar only if i have a prob with stains, which is rare as i use liners. i find 5 ml is sufficient.

Actually peroxide doesn't have that effect on PUL - it's a base and mostly made up of water. In contrast, vinegar is very acidic and as a result can break down PUL. If you use it, I recommend using it sparingly.

If you have PUL diapers peroxide is no good, it can break down the PUL...just thought i would add that to majaliwa's post :)

Your diapers can be saved.

Like Jacqueline recommended, I would strip them but I would use blue Dawn liquid soap, tea tree oil and hydrogen peroxide instead. The Dawn will get out the hard to remove stains. The oil will kill any germs and bacteria (which I'm sure have really grown since they've been sitting). The peroxide will help to whiten them.

Here's How:

Steps for Stripping Your Diapers

1. RINSE (cold with no detergent)

2. WASH HOT with 1 tbsp of blue Dawn liquid soap

3. RINSE repeatedly with no detergent or soap until you no longer see soap bubbles when the load is agitated.

4. Run one final RINSE with 1 to 2 tsps of 100% Australian Tea Tree Oil and 1/4 cup of Hydrogen Peroxide.

5. Line dry in the sun

I would do a strip wash...rinse rinse and rinse again...then wash on a normal wash but use bicarb soda and vinegar instead of your normal powder/liquid...rinse. then hang out in the sun...the sun helps bleach out the stains. If this doesn't help get a rockin green sample and soak them overnight(12hrs or more) you can get sample packets for about $3 of the rockin green soap website. if this all fails then i am sad to say that you will have to retire them. hope this helps and i hope that you can save your nappies :)
