Hey everyone! I usually tend to give my friends advice on cloth diapering, but I've tried everything- We are fed up with my son's unbelievable skill to soak every night! I went back to dispoables, even heavy nighttime ones, and we still are having issues. I do not want to use disposables at all, so I bought Drybees Fleece Nighttimes, and I love them! ( a great inner microfiber insert, and super soft!) but it's still not enough! I even doubled it with another microfiber insert, and all it did was give my slim baby waaaaay too much padding. I even make sure that there is no insert sticking out of the back and that all pieces are tucked in (to avoid leaks) but nothing is working! I tried BumGenius too (which is another fave) 3.0 one size, but the same deal. I am wondering if prefolds and wool covers would really stop this issue? And what can I do to use my nighttimes and get some assurance?

I've heard about hemp inserts-what is the deal with these and absorbancy and where can I get some? Help me please! I can only change the entire crib so much! (even naptimes= about 3 major bed changes a day!!!) HELP!!

I agree that wool covers are a great solution. but you have to be sure to care for them properly...
they are wonderful...but for a REALLY heavy wetter i wouldn't know...my kids were pretty wet, but not extreme.
and i usually added three or four layers of hemp liners and had a good result. huge butt though, so for tiny little ones that might be a problem with their back development!! lol

I have been battling this issue also. I've tried microfiber inserts, hemp inserts, prefolds and multiple combos of the above. I called the company that I buy diapers from and asked their opinion. I ended up buying a fitted Happy Hempy diaper and stuffing it with a Stuffins insert, which is also made of hemp. I use a fleece cover. My lo comes through the night dry, but she looks like she's got a tire around her belly. The combo is rather large, but it is getting her through the night without waking up soaked.

so you have the answer right there in your question

I am wondering if prefolds and wool covers would really stop this issue?

YES!!!! you have to stuff the pre folds though if you have a heavy wetter, I'd do hemp or bamboo. you could even try a Shammy you know the ones that show on TV absorbing a bowl of water. I would use multiple items, like hemp, shammy and microfiber.

But the wool is the key! use a wool cover they are amazing and not too hard to card for, see the convo topic caring for wool.

I buy all my diapers from a local lady--denverdiapers.com. She has bamboo inserts, hemp inserts (SUPER absorbency), and all kinds of diapers. Very reliable and you can call her anytime and ask her anything.

My son is also a heavy wetter--we use the thick prefolds and Bumkins covers at night and have had no leaks. We felt bad with him waking in the middle of the night in wet pj's so we tried several different diapers but the prefolds are the best.

I bought my inserts in a store (in France) but it's pretty basic-- just a few layers of bamboo terry cloth in a rectangle--so anywhere you find it is good.

Bamboo inserts and Leo Mighter nights- any recommendations on where to get them? I'd google, but I'd love something that someone else trusts!

Regarding your question about pre-folds...we don't use the wool covers so I don't know if that would add absorbancy. But, my baby soaks his pre-fold diaper and then wakes himself up so we switched to disposable. I would really like to know if you come up with a solution.

We use Leo Mighter Nights inserts for my super soaker son. He was soaking through EVERYthing till I found those.. and they have been miracle workers in his pocket diapers.. they were a bit pricey but worth every penny! :)

Oh... just thought I should qualify that... LOL I'm getting rashes because we co-sleep. So when Lily-Ann leaks, I get pee on my bed and on me. Not a good way to wake up.

Hey, if you find a solution, let me know... I started a new thread about this very topic. It blows my mind how much liquid one baby can produce during a night. Jeepers. I even started getting rashes (sensitive skin) from the leaking.

In the meantime, until you find a solution for the leaking, try layering your crib sheets (if you don't already) with a H2O-proof pad in between layers. This way you can just peel off the top sheet if its wet...saves pulling out the mattress and/or wrestling to change the sheets. This has been a lifesaver for me not jsut for leaks but when he has a cold and is "snotty"...good luck! I'll be interestef in hearing what you find works!!!

I used a prefold, with a hemp/fleece doubler, a flannel cover, and nikky waterproof pants. Then I upgraded to the hemp prefolds, and that made a huge difference.

I alos have a fleece sleep sack I've been using and we STILL get leaks! I hope all this will work!

I haven't had this issue with my son (yet), but I've heard that you can use a maxi-pad as a doubler for disposable dipes at night.

I use hemp and microfiber doublers and haven't really noticed a huge difference in absorbency, but if you're shopping around, cottonbabies.com has both.
