How young can you start to CD?

I'm due in 2 weeks with my first little one, and am wondering if I should/can start her out right away with cloth. I'm planning to try Flip. Will it just depend on how big she ends up being? How old were your kids when you started to use cloth? We received a bunch of 'sposies as shower gifts, including newborn size, should I start out with those and then switch to the Flips? Thanks for your input!

With my 1st, we started when we ran out of disposibles given to us from the hospital (so about 10 days) and she was 6lbs 9ozs at birth. We are planning a home birth with our second and plan on starting day 1 with cloth diapers. We did use Kissaluvs contoured diapers which weight wise start a little smaller than the Flip. (I work at a cloth diaper store!)

We started using cloth as soon as we came home. After 3 days in the hospital (planned c-section :( ) my baby's rear was already turning red...

We also got sposies at our shower... I would have donated them to our church nursery, but we're the only baby! So instead I gave 'em to a coworker who wasn't going cloth and who was due a month after me.

My daughter is 5 months and has NEVER worn disposables. Matter of fact, the nurse in the birthing center tried to put one on her and I asked to put our prefold on her instead. She said that our diaper was too cold because it had been in the diaper bag in the car (she was born Jan 9). I told her that I would wait until it warmed up then :-). I received many pack of disposables from baby showers and promptly returned them all to Target after she was born. We have only used prefolds and I love them. I wash them every other day. I never had any staining with the meconium. If you have a washer at home just toss them in on hot and do a prewash cycle then wash on heavy. Just fold them down in the back if they are too long and you can fold them down in the front too in order to avoid her cord.

right from the start. although, you might want to use sposies the first couple days because the meconium will stain the cloth diapers pretty bad. we had that unfortunate accident with one or our cloths and it still has green streaks on the liner :(

I just had my second and I made two dozen newborn diapers using darling diapers free newborn pattern. I did make them as newborn and not premie, but they are too big for my daughter. She was born at 7lbs 20 inches (so kind of tall and skinny) also she has a super tiny butt even for a baby. Anyways, I am using spoies for the first two weeks:( We considered getting some prefolds, but my husband did not feel comfortable buying them.

I started in the hospital with my second. I brought along my diapers and washed them when we got home. We used kissaluvs and thirsties covers...they worked well. Although my kids have really sensitive skin and the cotton doesn't seem to whisk away the wetness the way the fleece of fuzzibunz and bum genius do so I did transfer him as soon as I could to the bumgenius! good luck!!! whatever you choose will be great!!!

I started on Day 1, when he was released from the NICU after a 115 day stay (had to get that caveat in there) when he was 8 lbs, 8 oz. I use cotton prefolds (never heard of Flip) and got them in different weight sizes. The initial prefolds I purchased lasted through 10 lbs. The next ones went through 15 lbs, and now the ones I use go through 30 lbs. I think these will last until he's 2.

I used Earth's Best and huggies pure and natural for the first few weeks til his cord fell off and then moved him to flips at about 10 lbs

I didn't start until my son was 6 months old, because it was then that I had researched enough about cloth to begin. Like others have said, you can begin when you're ready! One thing about the flips is since they are a onesize diaper, they will probably be big on your newborn until he/she is 12-15 pounds.

start when YOU are ready! bringing a baby home is a huge change to your lifestyle, sposies for the first couple of weeks while your body is recovering and coping with lack of sleep etc is fine.

I started my toddler at 2 months only because it took me that long to discover the wide world of cloth.
For my baby that is due any day now we plan to cloth diaper as soon as we get home. We don't even have any spoises for her. I made her 24 newborn fitted cloth diapers. I worry about the merconium ruining the diapers so I made liners out of birds eye cloth. This way the poo will only stain the liners and be easier to clean. You can also buy liners online that you can throw away.

It's up to you and probably depends ont he kind of diapers you have and the size of your baby. We use Bumgenius one size, and found that they were a little too high and rubbed on my son's umbilical cord stub, so we used disposables for about 2 weeks until the cord stub fell off. Next baby I might try old fashioned flats and covers at the newborn stage.
If you have disposable you might as well use them up, because they won't fit for long anyway.

you can use them from the beginning. the hospital that my baby was born at actually has cloth for the babies to use, so that was great! i found that i preferred disposables for the first couple days just b/c i was so tired after having the baby that i didn't want to bother with laundry yet. but it only takes a couple days to get into the swing of things again.

I agree with all the other moms. Use them when they fit. The small pockets (not newborn sized) that we started out with said they started at 8lbs. I used sposies til then & then on the go & at night til I got the hang of things. Have several friends that used cloth as soon as they brought baby home from hosp. or if they had homebirth not at all. Good luck!

Carrie,
you can start day 1 like the other ladies recommended. I had several sposies when I came home from the hospital which was helpful because my son (who was supposed to be a "big baby") was only 5 lbs and even the newborn sized cloth diapers I had didn't fit him.

With that said, I would recommend purchasing only a few flips and working them in with your sposies to see if you even like them. Once you've gotten comfortable with the flips (or whatever other diaper you chose) you can make the switch - and the remaining sposies you can donate to charity. There are a lot of charities that accept donations of diapers for mothers in need.

Hope that helps.

You can start from day 1. Some diapers are better with the newborn stage than other diapers tho. I know that prefolds and covers or Kissaluv 0 (fitted) with a cover both work great with the newborn stage.

Some mamas do start out with sposies as their little one goes through the meconium stage as not to get stains on their fluffy cloth diapers.

You can start from Day 1! I used disposables in the hospital, but then when we got home, started with newborn prefolds with a cover. I also received disposables as shower gifts, but ended up only using them during outings. Now we don't use disposables at all and cloth diaper full time with mostly fitteds and a small stash of AIOs. I don't know much about the Flip line, but I would think the only reason you would have to wait to start CDing is if your Babe doesn't fit into them. Good luck!
