I use cloth diapers during the day and we use disposables at night to keep the pee. I have to change my son (or at least check him) every two hours. Does everyone/anyone have to take this special care with cloth diapers? I use pocket diapers and stuff them with microfleece and bunch it up most in the front. I'm just not sure if I'm washing them incorrectly (rinse pees and poos, dry pail, Arm & Hammer Sensitive skin, HOT wash), if he's a heavy wetter or if having to change him every 2 hours or less is normal. I'm getting kind of burnt out...... I need help.

Quoting Sierra:

if you really have to change every two hours it sounds like an absorbency issue in which case you should try to strip your diapers. I think A & H has Optical Brighteners in it which would explain the build up.

I agree.  That's the first thing that crossed my mind after reading your post.

I have some pocket diapers that leak and reading Vilate's post I think I know why now!
But I use an Australian diaper as well, Itti Bitti d'lish and they last for ages, no leaks unless he floods.
My son is a very heavy wetter though, he leaked through every brand of disposable as a tiny baby.
I can't get any more than 3 hours out of my fave diapers during the day and we are still doing disposables over night because he does poops at 2am and he leaks out of them as well.
I feel your leaking pain. I think some babies are just really big wetters.

yeah, I would go with the stripping thing and then you could also add some tea tree oil to the wash like 3-5 drops. Also I would get some wool covers. They are amazing! Since i started with the wool 2 years ago we have had no leaks and I have used some pockets with micro inserts. we were starting to leak out of them and that is when I found wool. with the freedom of wool though i have moved on to a fitted that I make using hemp. I would totally go with a hemp/bamboo insert. In fact i make and sell them mine are a layer organic hemp fleece and a layer of organic bamboo velour that is super soft! They fold in 1/2 so you have double the absorbency! you can see my diapers and wool and inserts here

if you want more infor on different types of CD's or wool i have a web page with tons of info here http://www.niftynappybyvilate.weebly.com

Let me know if I can help you in any other way. I could direct you to patterns for wool covers if yo sew of knit or crochet. Good luck

oh, also the way you sew a pocket will affect the leaking...

if you sew it with a folded in hem so the seam is inside then the fabric on the PUL will wick the moisture from the inside to the outside. you need to get ones -or make them-that have serged seams on the outside! Just thought you might like to know that!

hmmm. that doesn't sound normal. i use pockets with microfiber and have no leaks at night (12 hours) but disposables leak overnight on my son!

if you really have to change every two hours it sounds like an absorbency issue in which case you should try to strip your diapers. I think A & H has Optical Brighteners in it which would explain the build up. Stripping entails washing your diapers over and over (turn you water heater up!) until there are no suds on the rinse cycle during agitation. you can add 3 T of Calgon water softener to the first wash but no detergent.

Also i use A & H washing soda (wash cycle) and lemon juice (rinse cycle) in every load for day to day washing. and then i use like one tablespoon of detergent.

so that's how to deal with absorbency due to buildup if that is really your problem. if it's not maybe you could try bamboo or hemp inserts? they are very absorbant. OR i like usuing a bamboo/hemp fitted diaper at night. it's my turbo diaper! good luck!

I mostly rinse because we live in an apartment, and the washers SUCK. So, anything I can do to make sure they get clean is what I do. If I owned my own, I surely would not rinse but do an additional rinse in the washer ;) so..... add another insert? hemp/bamboo are the best?

I haven't had much luck with aios or pockets, but am in LOVE with prefolds, I do change every 2-3 hours, but he can go for 8-9 hours at night and not leak, and I don't rinse either. Good luck!

I also use pocket diapers with micro inserts. My daughter is change every 2-3 hours. At night she wears 2 micro inserts and she is fine after 12 hours of sleep. If she drinks a lot just before bed she will sleep with a micro and hemp insert. I do not rinse pees or poops just dump poop in potty and dry pail. I don't know but maybe you could try a hemp or bamboo insert that absorb more and you can go a little longer between changes. Keep up cding your doing great.
