My son is going to be 18 months on Nov. 16. He is a pretty big boy 31 pounds and probably around 33 inches. I've always wanted to use cloth diapers but my financial situation doesn't allow to much trial and error. So I was hoping someone with experience could recommend a good brand. He was using cheap walmart diapers forever but now he is almost running I had to switch to the huggies little movers because he was getting bad chaffing on his thighs from the diapers. So with that in mind I read that most cloth diapers are bulky and I dont want to spend all that money and him not able to use them. Any suggestions?

I use the Fuzzi Bunz and also the Bumgenius 3.0 and I love them all. But I recently tried the new Gro Diapers and think they are wonderful - NO LEAKS!! One size fits all and a little less expensive than some of the other brands.

We LOVE and use BumGenius 3.0 for both our boys. My oldest son is 20 months and is 33lbs. and we're still doing just fine with these dipes. We rarely have trouble with leaking etc.

Stacey it is hard to choose a diaper. I have a section of choosing cloth diapers on my webpage here http://niftynappy.com/diapering-faqs/

That being said, I make and sell diapers. I love them. They are super trim and they are a OS so they will fit and work no matter how old your kiddo is! :) you can find them on my webpage too. I have free shipping on my sets!
Good luck on your choosing and yeah for doing cloth!

Hands down love Bumgenius! I use them on my twin girls and have been since birth and they are 17 months now. No leaking and easy to care for. Good luck!

My 18 month old is almost the same dimensions as your guy. He's 31 pounds and ranks in the 95th percentile for height and I think 90th or something for weight. I've found the MOST of my pocket diapers are getting to be too small for him. The bumGenius 3.0 one-size pockets which are supposed to fit to 35 pounds barely go all the way around him if I've got an extra insert in there for nighttime. My Happy Heiny's pocket has never fit him well and digs into his back and legs. (He's a tall, slender-ish huge guy, so I don't know why we have these fit problems...) Our Blueberry one-size pockets still fit nicely, but they are SUPER expensive so I only own 2.

The best fitting pocket diaper we have right now is Fuzzi Bunz perfect fit size Large. I think they're around $17 a piece or so, but at http://kellyscloset.com they have some sort of deal where if you buy a certain amount (is it 6 or 10 or 12?) you get one free. At your son's age, if you wanted enough diapers for one day (planning to do cloth diaper laundry every night...which I hate...so I have a stash that lasts me 3 days...but to be budget friendly you could just get 1 day's worth) you'd probably need 7 or 8 diapers. That would probably get you through the day and give you a nighttime diaper and maybe one extra, depending on how often he needed changed.

Another option is to buy just a few Fuzzi Bunz pockets and then find a seamstress who could use them as a sort of pattern to make you some diapers. I find Fuzzi Bunz to be one of the easiest styles to copy (is that kind of talk allowed on here?) because it is so simple, and because it seems to fit my son the best, it's a win-win! Though I've never made pocket diapers myself, I just use the shape to make fitted non-moisture-proof dipes that need a cover, but this website has TONS of great fabrics (including the inside layer of microfiber and the outside layer of waterproof PUL) for making your own. http://verybaby.com Good luck with your search for the perfect dipe! I think most of us have gone through quite a trial and error of purchasing many different brands/styles before we found what worked for our kiddos and us. And for me, it has been different diapers at different stages of my son's growth and development that have worked best for me. Typically I'd recommend someone have a whole array of different kinds of diapers, but if you're just looking for one thing that works, my first suggestion would be the Fuzzi Bunz size large.
