I use Bumgenius all in ones and they smell of urine. I can not wash the odor out. Has anyone had this problem, if so how did you solve the problem?

this comes from the company that makes them.  Wash inserts once in hot water with Dawn (has to be Dawn original blue formula) Use 1 teaspoon for high efficiency machines and 1/2 bleach or 1 tablespoon Dawn for top loaders and 3/4 cup bleach.

Do 2 additional hot water washes with no detergent!

for the covers do the same ONLY without the bleach.

this worked for me!

I have been using Charlies Soap, and it even gets out "stinky man" smells. Yes, definitely the sun.

I would also suggest stripping them, adding tea tree oil and drying in the sun if possible... Good Luck!

Nothing works but bleach and direct sunlight. The manufacturers all say not to use bleach, but I have cloth diapered kids for 4 years excusively, and using only detergent doesn't cut it. Bleach is obviously more harmful to the fabric than sunlight, but not every climate or home can support laying out wet diapers to dry in the sun outdoor.

How long are they sitting in between washings? I use HH and Thristies and I have been doing a double rinse if I have to go more than two days w/o washing.

Heather's suggestions are what I was going to say. You can also add a couple of drops of tea tree oil to help with smell.

You could try changing detergents. Some detergents react with your water and everyone's water is a little diferent, so what works for one might not work for another. I had the ammonia problem with Tide, but we switched to Arm&Hammer Sensitive Skin and no more issues!

Another thing you might try is stripping your diapers. You might just have a residue on them. Run them in a hot washer with a few tablespoons of blue Dawn dish soap. I also add 1/2 cup of bleach to this load too... because I had problems with yeast. Cotton Babies recommends using only blue dawn to strip, not sure why. Then you need to do a few rinses to make sure the soap is all out. Let your washer fill and agitate and when you lift the lid and there are no suds in the water, you have rinsed enough. Usually two rinses work for us!

I read that if this happens, then use a squirt of liquid dawn (the dish detergent).  Good luck!
