I just got an old brother 761 sewing machine and the upper thread keeps breaking! Does anyone know a possible reason for this? It is threaded correctly and I can sew thru one layer of fabric, but not two.

You may need to have the upper tension adjusted i have had to take mine in and have this done at a repair shop before.

lol the only thing i HAVEN'T tried yet is a new needle :P I'm hoping that's the problem...i re-threaded the machine a dozen times, tried 3 different types of thread, different types of fabric, different tensions (top and bobbin) ...it's just frustrating :P but i have hope i'll figure it out :)

Could be a number of reasons. Tension, wrong thread, wrong/new needle, needs tune-up/oiled/defluffed, bobbin, thread facing wrong way, just bad machine......
