OxyClean?

We use Happy Heiny's one size cloth diapers and love them! But as my 8 month old is growing and he's used them since birth, some have become a bit stained. I cannot sun bleach the stains out as I live in the pacific northwest, and well there's just not been enough sun. Has anyone used Oxyclean on their cloth diapers and is it ok to do so? I know not to use bleach, but am wondering what would be harmful with oxyclean?

I have used bleach on my fuzzi bunz before, about every 6 mths. My diaper gal suggested it. I just run a normal cycle with bleach and soap and then another entire cycle with just water to make sure its all out. It does well with the old stains. I have used oxy clean before, I just would use it every so often and not all the time it seemed to be pretty hard on my last set of diapers I was using it all the time. Also I got some fleece at the fabric store and cut it into liners (my boy is now 9 mths and has pretty gross stuff) that I keep in the diapers and it has worked wonders in reducing the amount of stains that I have to deal with. Good Luck :-)

Yes, I have used OxyClean and it is safe to do so. It is basically just hydrogen peroxide in powder form. I was told by the lady we bought our cloth diapers from that it is completely safe to use and she recommended it. She is a cloth diapering expert. I don't know however, how well it will do on old stains....

Oxyclean is fine and safe for baby (add 2 scoops to your wash cycle). So is Peroxide (add 1/4 cup to your wash cycle). Vinegar, Baking Soda and Dawn will only remove detergent buildup that causes odors - but not stains.

Below is a link to an online resource with simple instructions for how to get out hard to remove stains by making a detergent paste:

Hope this helps.

I also use oxyclean on occasion and just do an extra 2 or 3 rinses to get it all out. The extra rinses also do a nice job of cleaning the diapers up anyway. I'm also in the Pacific Northwest and occasionally can sun bleach the dipes. You'd be surprised that it doesn't actually have to be like blazing bright sunshiney day sunny. It doesn't matter if it's a bit cool out, just as long as the sun is shining a bit. And then yep, I always throw them in the dryer with a wool or plastic dryer ball to soften them up.

And if you use prefolds, the chlorine bleach seems okay, but I once used a small amount on a mixed load of prefolds and microfiber inserts and even after 4 rinses I could still smell bleach. (I used an 1/8 cup of bleach on a full water cycle in my machine and then all the rinses...) I've never used bleach since but with oxy clean, lots of rinsing and occasional days in the sun, not a single one of my dipes is stained, and I have two little poopers! :) (One 3 months and one almost 2.)

Hydrogen peroxide will get out stains naturally. I tried this after the bum genius or happy heiny website suggested it. I can't remember which one I found that info at, but I tried it the first time I had a stain. You put it on the stain and let it dry. Then wash as normal. I have used oxy clean before as a way to remove residue when I had a repealing issue and dawn didn't work. It will not hurt the diapers.

Bleach is actually ok to use as long as you make sure it is completely rinsed out! I use a half cup of non-cholorine bleach per 5 gal bucket to bleach my daughter's diapers. After her diapers are bleached white, I rinse them out in our bathroom tub or sink. Then when you wash the diapers use detergent of choice. Add one cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle to remove detergent and bleach from the diapers. I wouldn't suggest using oxy clean....it may irritate the delicate bottom of your munchkin!!!

Hi Michele, I occasionally use OxyBaby on my diapers, but I rinse them a bunch of extra times because they feel a bit funny afterwards. I used it more often when I only used prefolds. But if you're looking to bleach naturally, buy a cheap laundry drying rack and sit them in the sun. Sometimes they feel hard afterwards, but a fluff in the dryer fixes that. (Also, doesn't matter the weather temp, just needs the sun. (: Hope that helps!
