Prefolds chafing... prevention ideas?

We use (unbleached) cotton prefolds inside PUL covers. In the past day or two my son (4 months old) has developed a slight rash on his upper/inner thighs and I think it's from rubbing on the diaper. He's gotten a lot more active, though he's not mobile yet.

Any thoughts on how to stop this from happening? I tried making my own fitteds out of the prefolds but they didn't hold enough fluid for my little dude. He needs all that bulk to soak up what he's got to give, otherwise I'd try to make the things smaller through the crotch. Other ideas?

Thanks!

thanks both of you.

vilate - i went with the prefolds for economy's sake but did receive some bamboo inserts from a friend whose potty trained boys once used pocket diapers. i'll try laying one of those in with the fitteds i made and see if it helps. he hasn't had ANY rashes until now and we've used the same system since birth in january, so i'm hesitant to blame breathability but then again it has gotten warmer lately.

majaliwa - no rashes around his waist and the ones on his legs aren't where the cover hits him. they're inside it... i realized after posting my question that this must just be diaper rash that everybody talks about so it's probably pretty normal. but i still want to fix it! thanks for the tips. i made these covers myself and they haven't given us any trouble up to this point :)

Are you seeing any rashes forming at all around his waist?

1) If YES

then that would indicate he's allergic to the rubber and other synthetics in the PUL cover and you'll want to switch to a more breathable, natural cover like a wool cover.

2) If NO,

then its likely that the PUL cover just isn't giving a good fit around his legs and you'll need to choose another kind.

Top recommended PUL covers include:

Thirsties Duo Wraps

Mother Ease Air Flow covers

- Both breathe well and provide snug, but comfortable fits for babies.

I think the making your own fitteds is a good idea, but then you need a more absorbent fabric as an insert! I would suggest HEMP! hemp is amazingly absorbent! 10X's more absorbent than cotton.
I make and sell cloth diapers, and I sell inserts too. They are just lay-in inserts and if you just laid them in for more absorption it wouldn't add that much bulk! Also I would suggest wool covers instead of the PUL covers. It could be the covers! PUL is not that breathable and wool is totally breathable!

Good luck!
