Prefolds drying baby's skin

We use unbleached Indian cotton prefolds from clothdiaper.com with thirsties covers on our little boy. We thought he had a rash because the area above his penis and his upper thighs are red. I just noticed today that his bottom looks really dried out (not red at all) but the areas that do not touch the diaper are normal. His thighs and lower back are really dry were the edge of the diaper touches also. Has anyone else had problems with prefolds drying out their littles one's skin? What did you do to take care of it?

Check and see if your laundry detergent uses enyzmes in it. If so it can irritate baby's bottom..

I'm going to second the opinion that your problem is more likely a detergent allergy.  Cotton shouldn't be able to dry out your baby's skin.  Only super absorbant materials like micro fibre (like the inserts for most pocket diapers) could do that. 



Soap nuts really are good.  I use them for washing my diapers and kids clothes and I also boil them to make baby wash and wipe solution and since I have been using them my baby's diaper rash and my older child's eczema have cleared right up.  You could also try adding another hot rinse to your wash routine or switching detergent brands in case your son is just sensitive to a certain kind.

You could also try fleece liners. Just get some from JoAnns or Walmart, cut strips, and lay them in the diaper.

Sure...soap nuts just go in a little drawstring bag, and you throw it in the washer. You can wash all your clothes in them. 3 - 4 soap nuts in the bag will last for 2 - 3 washes. I ordered a 500g bag maybe 6 months ago and it's maybe half used. And it cost about $25, so it's fairly cheap too. I got mine at www.rgnaturalbabies.com.

We use Happy Heiny's at night but since it's only then I really can't tell. We have a front loading washer, can you use soap nuts with that?

Are prefolds the only type of diaper you use? If not, is this happening with any other type of diaper? Because it may not be the diaper, it may be the way you're washing it. If there is any soap residue left in the diaper, it could dry his skin. I personally love soap nuts, they clean everything thoroughly and leave no residue at all. You might want to try a different wash routine. I do hot/cold with soap nuts, and hot/cold with nothing, then dry. Even if I have to use rash cream I still don't have any problems or need to strip. Speaking of stripping...I'd try that too. 2 tbsp of blue Dawn dish soap in the wash with the diapers, then rinse until there are no more bubbles.
