Sewing a bed mat for occasional bed wetting?

My five year old occasionally wets the bed but is mortified to wear pull ups at night. When he has an accident without any "protection" he wakes up really upset and has a hard time falling asleep again. The alternative seems to be disposable bed mats...a good idea but with flaws. It would seem to me that I could sew a super absorbent pad with cloth diaper supplies. I just wonder whether it would be absorbent enough to wick away the liquid so that it wouldn't wake him. Has anyone tried this or know of any reason it wouldn't work or have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Erinn

Hi Erinn,
How did it go? Did you make a pad? Is it working?

Hi Erin,
I have used incontinence pads meant for adults, they work great for my 6 month old's naked time. And she is a heavy wetter. I think you can find them at drug stores.
If you want to use what you have, I would layer a bunch of diapers and sew them, use a fleece top or silk layer to keep him dry. These two fabrics, especially fleece, will keep your son feeling dry, while letting the moisture soak through to the diapers. As for the bottom, to keep the moisture from getting onto his bedding, maybe a canvas layer, the kind made for tents with the plastic-y stuff on one side.
Good luck!
