So 3 days ago my diaper pail started smelling really rank, "hold your breath when you open it" bad. This has never happened before and I've been cloth diapering for years!!! Baking soda isn't working to control the smell, so does anyone have any suggestions? Oh and it is a dry pail, which I washed only yesterday and it smells again :S

Ooh thanks for the idea, I've never stripped my diapers before, maybe it's time to try that ^_^

RLR is amazing stuff, I have no idea what all is in it, aparently the main ingredient is just washing soda but what ever else they add to it works like magic to strip out soap and mineral buildup from diapers. Normally if my diapers get stinky I can just wash them a few times in hot with no soap and that fixes the problem, but recently in an effort to save some electricity we switched from regular to cold water tide and it does not agree with hemp fitted diapers. None of the regular stuff I did worked so I ordered RLR from a diaper store online, the amount of soap in the hemp fitteds was just gross, I had to stop the washer in the middle and scoop out the bubbles because you couldn't even see through the door anymore. I have pics on my blog. I'm yet to find a local source for it, but some people have found it at walmart in the states and in some higher end grocery stores in Canada and the states.

What's RLR?

Ours get bad if the diapers need to be stripped, we only wash once a week so there is an amonia smell no matter what, but it only gets bad if there is soap and mineral buildup on the diapers. After I strip them with RLR the pail barely smells at all even at the end of the week, more air flow into the pail can help too, lots of people just leave the lid open all the time so the diapers get lots of air and they say there is no stink.

Mine started getting smelly recently, I think it has something to do with my son's age as we have made it 19 months without a stinky pail. He's just getting older and having big boy stink!

i wash my load nightly as i find i can hang it on the clothes airer inside to start the drying process off but i also still end up with a smelly pale on the odd occasion in a little netted bag you can get from your crafy shop i put some natural room fragrances like lavender to help with the smell and white vinegar is the best thing to wash it out i really hope these help youwith

I wash second daily & rinse the bucket out with a natural based cleaner - orange power. Cleans & disinfects. Works a treat & keeps it smelling great. I dry it once cleaned & air it overnight. My boy is a heavy wetter, so I tend to rise his worst pee ones (mainly just the inserts) before dry pailing them.
Just as an extra, if your nappies are smelling abit too even after a good wash, try washing them in a bit of washing up detergent on a hot cycle - works wonders! I tend to do it everytime the dishwashing liquid bottle is run out - gets the last drops out (no wasting :D) & brings the nappies up great too :P

i wash every second day and rinse the pail at the same time... just give it a squirt with the hose.

i think if you do this every time you wash it keeps on top of the smell. i also leave the lid off to dry it out over night when its empty.

id piss off all the natural deoderisers and just bleach the shit out of it to kill all the bacteria and smell then start fresh and remember to rinse it every time you wash.

Is it the diaper pail or the diaper pail liner?

If it's the diaper pail itself: I recommend wiping it down with warm water & vinegar to kill the odor causing bacteria and then let it air dry in the sun.

If it's the diaper pail liner - you have a few more options:

1. change your diaper pail liner: PUL tends to hold more ammonia odors than just a regular cotton laundry liner

2. add one of these deoderizers to your pail to keep odors at bay:
a) Citrus Disks - compressed paper disks with natural citrus oils (just toss in the pail)
b) Baking Soda - sprinkle a little on each diaper before placing it in the pail
c) Essential Oil or Tea Tree Oil - add a few drops to a cloth rag and toss in the pail
d) Diaper Buddies - disk scented with natural oils (toss in the pail for odors and then keep in washer to increase wash efficiency)

If your doing wash every couple of day, your diapers should NOT smell that badly in that time to make your pail smell... i'd try to give the diapers a quick rinse in the sink before putting them in there.
